EIGHTEEN

"So why does Jack always seem to want to talk to you nowadays?" Ivy asked me as she sipped on her avocado smoothie.

I sipped on my own strawberry smoothie slowly to test it out. I shrugged as I said, "He just wants to be friends."

"Is that all? He just wants to be friends?"

"Yes..." I trailed off and stared confused at her. "Why? Is there another thing you know of that I don't?"

"It's just that," she shook her head, "nevermind. No, there's nothing."

"Okay," I said slowly, squinting confusingly at her, weirded out by how she was acting. I pushed my half-empty smoothie away from me, and I caught Ivy shooting me a look. "What?"

"I've been noticing that you haven't eaten a lot in this competition," she said carefully.

I scoffed. "What?? What are you talking about?" I asked, picking on my nails.

"You're-"

"El!" Someone called out for me; someone who I wasn't really expecting to see anytime soon.

I pinched my eyes and slowly turned around, almost reluctantly. "Johnson..."

"Still not calling me J?" he asked with a little pout. I shook my head. "What happened to us?" I only stared blankly at him. "C'mon, we used to be so close. We used to tell each other everything, and then all of a sudden, you stopped every single contact with me."

"It wasn't just all of a sudden, Johnson," I informed, looking tiredly at him. "I can't believe you don't understand how I felt."

He sighed. "Jack and I aren't the same people. Just because he hurt you or because you aren't with him or because you can't stand him, doesn't mean you have to push me away too."

"Too?" I angrily snapped. "I didn't push Jack away. In fact, he left all on his own."

"Jack's pretty convinced that you were in the wrong."
