One of the things he saw was his 'father' burning letters in the fire. After he had left the room, once the fire went out. Koa went in as he looked through the fire to see what was burnt he saw a piece of parchment that had Kin's handwriting on it.
There was another letter not burned nearby with kin's handwriting on it. He opened that one, read it. He hid it on him and went to his room and decided he was making a plan to get out.
He escaped when he learned the ship his uncle had was docking for a while he heard the maids talk about it he left in the night and technically he became a stowaway. When kin found him hiding in faers room. They were both happy from that point Kin was rarely out of Koa's sight and Koa was rarely out of Kin'd sight.
He struggled alone. He always has and he always will. That letter will stay with him until the end.
