Oz's POV
Oz hummed along to Hot Chelle Rae as the musician's song blasted through the speakers of his laptop. He was enjoying his day off of work. He never once thought that his status as a future Alpha would get him anywhere else in life other than a position on the Alpha Council. His father taught him from a young age that money doesn't grow on trees. Even though he lives in a pretty nice house and has more money than he knows what to do with, having a job takes his mind of things. The rest of his pack is pretty well off too. In fact, the rest of his pack lives in the same neighborhood. They had all bought the houses when the contractors where still building.
The only house that the de la Vega pack wasn't able to buy was the one two houses down from his own. It had been bought before the pack had started looking for a new territory. And it housed the prettiest girl he had ever seen in his life. Rio Sanchez had always been beautiful, but as the years went on, Oz found himself gravitating towards her. Her beauty was astounding. He didn't know what was wrong with him. She wasn't Were, so she couldn't possibly be his mate. Oz highly doubted she was anything other than human. She was too... good. From what his mom told him, she volunteered every Tuesday and Thursday at the soup kitchen downtown. And she even fed the homeless on weekends. According to his mom, her family was very religious. They went to church every Sunday and on Wednesday Rio went to a youth group.
Andre Black, Oz's best friend and closest thing to a brother, was a Office TA. He knew about Oz's weird attraction to Rio, so when Oz asked him to sneak her file from the office, Andre wasn't surprised at all. Once Oz got his hands on the file, he spent hours pouring over the words. He knew she had a perfect attendance record and never got sick. He knew her grades were never going to stray from straight A's.
But that didn't help him when he was trying to know her. He wanted to know what was on her mind. He wanted to know what made her happy and what made her sad. Andre insisted several times to ask her on a date, but Oz could never get his courage up. Andre would laugh at that. Then he'd say something about how he'd make a terrible Alpha if he couldn't even get the courage up to ask a human out for dinner.
The doorbell rang, yanking Oz from his thoughts. He stood from his desk and shouted through the house, "I got it!"
"Thanks, baby!" his mom called back. She was probably in her studio, painting the trees. Like Oz, she needed something to keep her mind off the pack drama too.
Oz bounced down the stairs and threw open the door. "Rio," he said, shocked. She never came to his house willingly. Maybe this was his chance to ask her out!
"I brought food," she said. Oz's gaze slid from her face to the plate in her hands. She held the food away from her as far as physically possible. Just her body language told him she still didn't want anything to do with him. When they were kids, Oz and his fellow playmates would follow her around, tugging on her piggy tails and trying to convince her to join their pack. She was only outside for a maximum of fifteen minutes a day because she would always run inside if Oz and his friends were playing.
"Oh. Thanks." Oz was trying not to sound too depressed that she wasn't there to see him on her own free will. He gave her a small smile before taking the plate. It smelled really good. He'd learned a long time ago to never turn down Mrs. Sanchez's food. Trying to be polite, he invited her inside. "Do you wanna come in?"
She looked startled for a second. "Oh... Uhm... No. I have to take Taj on a walk," she said, tugging on the leash. Oz glanced at the black pit bull standing protectively in front of Rio. He had almost forgotten she had adopted the dog.
"Okay," Oz said. "Maybe another time then?"
Rio took a step away from him, pulling the growling dog with her. "Yeah. Maybe," she said. She looked at her pit bull and said, "Come on Taj. Let's go."
Oz waved goodbye, staring after her with a heavy heart. Why couldn't I scrape up the courage to ask her out already? Doesn't she see I'm in love with her?
Sooo... What do you think of Oz? He be attractive, no? Taylor Lautner was made for this!
