Oz's POV
Oz opened his fancy car door for Rio. She gave him a smile and slid into the beautiful baby blue 1959 Chevrolet Corvette. She settled into the leather seat and breathed in the old car smell. As her date opened his own door and entered the car, she commented, "Nice car."
"Thanks," Oz replied. "It was my grandfathers."
"It's beautiful."
Her comment earned her a smile. Rio's heart fluttered in her chest and butterflies tickled her tummy. She was nervous, but at the same time, she was excited. It had been a few years since her last date and she was scared to find out how her first date with Oz would go.
They drove out of the neighborhood in silence. Rio didn't know what to say to the boy she's hated for her whole life, so she watched the cars and the trees go by as they took the freeway to downtown Wywano.
"Where are you taking me?" Rio finally asked.
Oz shrugged. "I thought I'd take you to a cute pizza place I know, then we'd go for some ice cream or something?"
"No movies?" asked Rio.
"Uh... Not unless you would like to go. I mean, I wasn't planning on it or anything—"
"Pizza and ice cream sounds wonderful," said Rio, interrupting Oz's rambling.
"Oh..." Oz breathed a sigh of relief. "Why did you ask then?"
Rio's mouth shut immediately. Should I tell him? Or should I lie?
"Come on, you can tell me," said Oz. "I won't laugh. I promise."
"It's not that I think you would laugh," admitted Rio. "It's that I'm just embarrassed that I think it."
To hide her shame, she turned her head away from Oz's prying eyes and stared out the window. Suddenly, she felt a warm hand on her knee. Very cautiously, she glanced at Oz.
"Think what, Rio?" His dark eyes searched hers while also watching the road in front of him. "You can tell me anything."
Rio sighed and looked at his hand on her knee. "I just— I just thought a good date consisted of popcorn and a movie. And when I dated Francisco—"
"You dated someone else?" Oz asked. His hand slipped from her knee, instead gripped the steering wheel. He didn't know what was going on with him. Once she said another guy's name, all of a sudden, this blinding rage and jealousy built inside him. Oz didn't know she had dated someone else. And to be honest, he felt that he was the only one allowed to be near her.
Among that rage and jealousy, there was a hunger... A need to claim her as his own. The desire to murder the other guy who had touched her, kissed her, whispered her name, became the only thing he could think about.
But all that went away with one simple touch of her hand on his arm. The desire to kill faded away to nothing, as well as the feelings of anger and jealousy. However, the need to stake his claim on her only intensified. He needed her now. There was no way he would be able to survive the end of high school without her.
"Change of plans," Oz said, taking the nearest exit ramp.
Uhmmm.... Didn't see that one coming.
Why is he turning around? Why in the flip is he so jealous of this..... guy that she dated?
