I woke up feeling dizzy. I had to blink several times to get a clear view of my surroundings.
Ah yes, the intensive care unit...
My hand went to my head where it hurt.
A bandage... Oh right...
I sat up carefully, supporting myself on the bed. Someone adjusted the pillow behind my head to make me more comfortable. I gritted my teeth as the memory of what happened flooded back. I glared at him.
He wasn't wearing his eye mask; his white strands of hair fell across his face, and his baby blue eyes were filled with emotions.
He cleared his throat, looked briefly to the side, down at the floor, and murmured, "I'm sorry... I didn't think it would hit you so hard."
I looked at him incredulously, my voice rising, "HUH, YOU DIDN'T KNOW?"
I tried to sit up completely as the adrenaline kicked in, but I winced in pain, squeezing my eyes shut.
He quickly came to my aid. He placed one hand gently under my back and held my arm with the other, easing me back down onto the bed.
His voice was soft, "Take it easy, you shouldn't move too much yet."
I opened my eyes, turned my head slightly towards him, and furrowed my eyebrows in anger, "Why do you think is that so ?"
He opened his mouth to say something but seemed to change his mind.
He sat down in the chair with a sigh, scratched the back of his neck, "It really wasn't intentional-"
I interrupted him, anger welling up inside me, "LIES!"
He looked at me, surprised, and stopped.
I pointed a finger at him accusingly, "You did it because I was so mean to you the day before! Made you kill a man-"
My voice broke as I said that.
He just looked at me intensely.
Tears welled up, "I really wanted to apologize! I'm truly sorry!"
My vision blurred, but I tried my best to hold back the tears. A short silence ensued. I noticed the tension in his body.
His expression changed... neutral?
His voice was icy and sharp like a blade that could pierce your heart but also calm, "I'm telling you the truth, I didn't do it on purpose. I actually expected you to protect your body with a simple barrier... after all, you learned that six years ago... and besides..." His eyebrows furrowed slightly, his voice sharp, "Yes, I was pretty pissed at you."
My eyes widened.
Then why did he still help me?
Please don't say it was out of pity; that would eat me up inside.
