Am I in trouble?

Damian

After a week of planning we were going to execute the plan later. Though, until then I had to catch up with school. It sucked like usual, but it was almost unbearable when I couldn’t find my best friend.

He wasn’t at school ever since I came back from training months ago. He wasn’t answering my calls and texts either which worried me.

“Hey Damian!” I froze on my way to math class then turned around to see Leonard running towards me. He stopped a metre away then bent down to catch his breath. After a minute or two he straightened himself and smiled warmly at me. “What’s up man?”

Please do not invite me to another party on a freaking Monday.
“Nothing much.” I replied feigning a smile. “How about yourself?”

“I have been good man.” Leonard replied. “Hey, I heard that Benjamin dropped out of school.” I widened my eyes in shock. I always thought I would drop out of school first between us.

“Do you know why?” I asked. The bell rang, but I needed to know the answer first.
“No idea. From the rumours I heard he was planning to leave the country soon.” Leonard replied.

I wrinkled my eyebrows. The information just didn’t make sense. Benjamin and I were slackers at school, but he was also low-key a hard worker. He always talked about wishing to be a lawyer one day. It seemed strange that he would drop out and wish to leave the country – allegedly.

“Sorry. I have to go. See you later.” Leonard said making me snap out of my thoughts. I turned to him and nodded.
“See you later Leonard.” I said as he walked away to biology class while I continued to make my way slowly to math class.

I arrived and found Mister Johnson standing in front of the class teaching. He stopped and turned to me with an annoyed look. I smiled warmly and waved at him before making my way inside.

I quietly sat down on my chair and got comfortable.
“Right. As I was saying.” He began after rolling his eyes. I inhaled softly then lowered my eyes as my mind began to spin with the information I just learnt about Benjamin.

Hours later I was finally free to escape the jail known as school. However, not fast enough.
“Damian, I need to talk to you. Please come to my office.” Principal Amy said walking inside English class which was the last class that I had for the day.

“Ooh. Busted.” Sanders mocked while Josh snickered. If it were a normal day I would’ve given them both the third degree, but because I was nervous about my plan actually working I remained quiet and watched them leave.

I glared at the principal who was waiting for me to follow her out the classroom to her office. I had no other choice.

I dropped my head then exhaled indignantly before grabbing my stuff and followed the principal to her office. After a few minutes we arrived in front of a brown wooden door that had ‘Principal’ printed at the top in bold red font.

“After you.” Principal Amy said after the opening the door. I only hoped that whatever she wanted to speak to me about wouldn’t drag too long.

As I quietly walked inside the office the principal followed behind me and closed the door behind her.
“Am I in trouble?” I asked sitting down on a chair across her usual seat.

She frowned because I did not get an invite to sit down, but thankfully the principal brushed the matter aside and got straight to the point while approaching her chair.

“In a way.” She replied after she sat down and linked her hands together then studied me carefully. “I heard that you were really smart back in elementary school. You were the top of your class before your mother…” Her voice hesitantly trailed off.

I honestly do not know why she brought the topic up if she was going to hesitate soon after. It was probably like a duty to acknowledge my grief while actually it was only a way to make her feel like she was helping. That was how it went about even with other people too.

Nobody can imagine what I was going through, and no, it was not going to get better. All those lies I heard at my mother’s funeral were only just lies. A part of me wanted to believe them, but I had to face reality and the facts.

“I just grew lazy Principal Amy. High school and elementary school are not the same thing. You can’t compare them like that.” I said with a forced smile.

“Right. Of course.” Principal Amy said looking slightly relieved that I didn’t break down from the mention of my deceased mother. Her duty was fulfilled.

“Forgive me, but what I’m getting at Damian is that there have been a lot of complaints about you. Not just from Mister Johnson. We understand that you're still grieving for what happened, but at this rate you will fail.” She explained.

“Right. Got that.” I nodded slowly as I realized that I was about to explode. “Can I leave now?” I asked making the principal frown.
“No. I'm not done yet.” She replied.

“And I understand, but I really need to get going now.” I said getting up from the chair and tuned to the door.

“Damian, if you walk out of that door–”
“Bye Principal Amy.” I heckled while raising a thumb up as I walked out of her office. After I did I closed the door behind me and took a deep breath. Focus on the plan.

I took another deep breath again while closing my eyes. However, I was distracted by my phone vibrating from a text.
“Hurry up. We don’t have all day.” It came from Chase. I rolled my eyes and began typing a response before looking for an empty room where I can secretly teleport to hell.
