Back on duty

Chase

I climbed downstairs to grab a snack hours later after Damian left. Yesterday was a very close call. Though, I had to admit myself that Damian was getting stronger which worried me because he was only being the boss of hell temporarily.

In other words, that meant that he wasn’t supposed to be getting stronger or else he might get attached to the position and allow it to get into his head.

Humans relied on their morals and values. However, those things don’t stop them from experimenting to their full potential, and what does instead are laws. It is the law that is stopping people from murdering each other without facing severe consequences.

Although, Damian hadn’t taken a life yet, apart from Brycen my fear was that because hell was not governed on laws he was going to crave to experiment and become too strong to overthrow.

With that in mind I left the packet of chips that I had taken out of the cabinet then limped my way towards the council's room. I heaved out a deep sigh feeling frustrated because that five minute walk was now ten minutes because of the injured leg.

I ball my left hand into a fist then brought it to knock on the black door.
“Chase? What are you doing still up?” Malcolm asked before I could knock. I paused for a moment then turned to his perplexed face. “Forget that. What are you doing out of bed? Shouldn’t you be resting that?” He asked referring to the casted leg.

“It’s fine.” I said dismissively. “I was hoping to inquire you about the progress on finding a way to transfer ownership from the human to someone else? Someone more capable to rule hell?”

Malcolm nodded then dropped his gaze to the black tiled floors beneath us.
“Two of the council members have volunteered to ask the first devil about it.” He replied turning to me.

I wrinkled my eyebrows.
“Lucifer?” I asked. “You think he might know?” I asked.
“It’s worth a shot Chase.” Malcolm shrugged. “Though, it might take some days for them to reach Lucifer. Be patient. We’ll find a way and you won’t have to worry about Damian anymore.” He said.

“I’m not worried about him.” I argued. “I am only worried about the safety of hell.”
“Sure you are.” Malcolm chuckled softly while rolling his eyes as I frowned. “Go to bed. The more you rest the faster you will heal and be back on duty again.” I don’t comment and watched as the third member of the council leave.

I lowered my eyes and wrinkled my eyebrows as something hit me. Why were they fetching Lucifer instead of summoning him? He may be the first devil, but I knew that he wouldn’t have minded the summoning because of the dangers his Kingdom was facing.

“Maybe they have their reasons. As long as they involve fixing this fucking mess then I have no complaints.” I hissed under my breath then sighed softly. I turned back to the direction of the kitchen and began limping towards it again to fetch my snack, and go to bed later.

–––––––––––––––––––––

A few days passed by and I was growing impatient. Sitting in my room and laying in my bed the whole day was going to drive me insane. I had to go back to work.

I arrived at the main room where Oliver and Rachel looked like they were arguing while both hovering above the table. I almost approached them till a sudden thought hit me which caused me to take two steps back.

Though, I was taken aback when I felt someone wrap an arm around my waist. I widened my eyes then turned to the human who I had no idea where did he come from.

“Hi.” He smiled. I almost couldn’t think straight because of the arm around my waist. Damian noticed as he chuckled softly. “Do you like that?” He asked in a husk whisper.

I narrowed my eyes and pushed him away.
“No. I don’t.” I replied patting my hot cheeks with the back of my hands. What was going on with me? Forget that. What was Damian hoping to achieve?

I turned to him and he winked. I felt my heart miss a beat and my stomach swirl. I quickly looked away frowning at the strange things that were happening to me.
“No. I am the best. I have four hundred and sixty souls.” Oliver said.

Rachel cackled then scoffed.
“Oh please. That number is nothing. I have six hundred and fifty. Try to catch up instead of settling for last place Oliver.” She said making him frown.
“Chase, how many do you have?” Oliver asked turning to me.

“One thousand and one.” I calmly replied then chuckled inwardly as everyone’s jaw fell.
“That number should be of a boss.” Rachel said. “Brycen’s was two thousand and fifteen.” She and Oliver turned to Damian.
“Wait. You’re now asking me?” He questioned while pointing at himself.

“Well, you are the boss of hell, aren’t you?” Rachel asked.
“How do you think anyone would respect you if you behave like this? Without any souls to brag about?” Oliver asked.
“Damian will not be able to get souls.” I said making all three of them snap their necks towards me.
“Why not?” Damian asked.

I debated whether or not I should disclose my true reason. I am afraid of you loving the power and wish to never leave.

“Because…” No. He couldn’t know the true reason. Nobody could. “I don’t think you’d be able to do it. You’re too pathetic and a coward. You’ll never be a devil.” I said hoping that will crush his hopes and dreams. Surely now, he wouldn’t dare to try. That was what I thought. Boy, was I wrong.
