Chapter 37
You are on your own, kid
Adira
"You are good for nothing."
"Mom, I'm trying."
"That we can clearly see, and what are you wearing, seriously? Stop eating too much, Esha."
"I'm controlling my diet, and this is one of my designs."
"No wonder you are not getting sales. I will see you tonight. Please behave nicely and get married before your hair turns gray, for God's sake."
I was passing through the lobby when I overheard Esha and her mother's conversation. Their words were like sharp arrows, aimed directly at Esha's self-esteem. I hesitated for a moment, conflicted about whether to intervene or continue on my way. But I knew that this was a private matter between them, and I needed to focus on tonight's event.
Today was the anniversary day, a day we had been preparing for. It held significant meaning for Ayan. The entire place was bustling with activity and the preparations were in full swing.
After yesterday's fight, Ayan and Arjun were avoiding each other. They weren't even talking to Viraj or Kavya. Thankfully, Ayan didn't press me further about Arjun last night when I went to our room. He simply kept his distance and remained quiet for the rest of the night.
Esha's gaze met mine, and she couldn't resist delivering a pointed comment. "Oh, Adira, isn't this all so dramatic? Your little secret affair causing such a stir." Her words dripped with sarcasm and a touch of malice. She must have seen me passing by, and her words carried a hint of snideness that I couldn't ignore.
When Ayan confided in me about not having told anyone yet, a hunch formed in my mind. It wasn't hard to deduce that Esha might have been the one to spill the beans to his mother. I had learned not to be oblivious to her actions anymore; I kept a watchful eye on her activities.
I let out a sardonic smile. "Was it worth it?" I asked, my tone carrying the weight of all the suspicions I had about her involvement. I didn't need to elaborate further; the expression on her face said it all. It was clear that she had played a role in stirring up the chaos that had unfolded.
"It wasn't me. You guys messed up by yourselves. Maybe you should have been more discreet," Esha retorted, her words laced with a defensive tone.
I raised an eyebrow, a confident smile playing on my lips. "The word discreet, coming from you? That's quite rich. I knew about you and Ayan since Goa. Had my doubts even before that."
Esha's eyes widened for a moment, her composure faltering. "I don't know what you're talking about," she attempted to deflect.
I took a step closer, my gaze steady. "Esha, I may have chosen to keep quiet for the sake of everyone's sanity, but I'm not blind. I've seen your actions and your intentions, and they're not as hidden as you might think. Think and look twice before you get down on your knees next time."
