Emily's POV:We got home, the final minutes of the walk feeling as though they were never ending. We went through the front door, and i headed straight to the sofa, Lucy following close behind me. I silently pulled out my phone. I was done avoiding this, I just wanted it to be over. Lucy was sat beside me and before I pressed play on the first voicemail I shot her a quick uneasy glance. I was met with her reassuring eyes which was enough for me to play it.
'Emily it's your dad. I think you should come home. We can talk about what happened and I can apologize. Just come home and we can sort this out. Call me'
When I heard his voice my body tensed but hearing the words he was saying left me beyond confused. He never apologized for anything. He was being strangely calm and it intensified the uneasy feeling in my stomach. I cleared my throat trying to shake off the feelings bubbling inside me. I had to listen to the rest. Lucy, still sat silently beside me, her presence an unwavering reminder that I was safe. I pressed play on the second voicemail I had received, sent a day after the one I had just listened to'Emily I am sick of this little game you're playing. You need to come home now. I am your father, the only person left in your life who give the smallest shit about you. I mean it. Come home now'
I realized what he was doing, he was gaslighting me into thinking he was the only person left in my life. But he was wrong. I had Lucy. There was a slight contrast in his voice since the last voicemail. He was getting increasingly angrier the longer I ignored his demands. I could hear how his anger was just simmering below the surface. I had become accustomed to the way his voice sounded and the small indications in his tone and how they portrayed his emotions. I was scared to listen to the next one because I knew it wouldn't take much until he completely exploded. I took a deep breath, trying to calm the anxiety that was rising inside me. Lucy, obviously sensing this moved her arm from the back of the sofa and rested it on my shoulder, providing a sense of comfort that I desperately needed right now.
