Clio

After Zilas almost died of laughing, while he was at it I made breakfast for us. Calliope requested Sardinas and I cooked it for her, I prepared a sunny side up for Zilas in case he doesn't eat something like this. Knowing his status, I can guarantee that he doesn't even know what sardinas are. The three of us gathered at the table together, we prayed before we began eating.

“ Kuya Zilas, have some po. ” Calliope offered Zilas the bowl of sardinas I fried, tiningnan lang ito ni Zilas na tila hindi niya mawari kung ano ang binigay sa kaniya ng bata.

“ Nak, hindi siya kumakain niyan. ” Bulong ko kay Calliope, napatingin sa akin ang anak ko at tumango. She looks disappointed dahil hindi man lang tinikman ni Zilas ang kaniyang inoffer na pagkain.

“ I'll.... I'll eat some. ” Zilas stuttered and scooped a spoonful of sardinas. He almost put everything in his spoon to his mouth buti nalang I was fast enough to hold his arm and stop him from swallowing that much saltiness in one go.

“ Ilagay mo muna sa rice mo, ” I carefully grabbed his spoon from his hand and smothered the fried sardinas on the rice on his plate. I made sure to mix it all well.

“ Thanks, ” pagpapasalamat niya sa akin. Ngumiti lang ako sa kaniya and after mixing his rice with the sardines, binigay ko na sa kaniya ang kutsara.

“ So, I can eat this now? ” He asked habang nakatingin sa akin, as if he was a child asking for permission from me.

“ Yeah, kain kana. ” I answered him, tiningnan ko si Calliope na nakatingin lang kay Zilas. She was confused about why this man doesn't know how to eat something like this.

Zilas scooped rice smothered in the broth of sardinas and put some in his mouth, it looks like he was analyzing the taste and texture in his. He was chewing it slowly like his trying to put his finger on what it tasted like.

“ Don't force yourself po, if ayaw mo it's okay po. ” Sabi ni Calliope, nakikita niya sigurong nag-iba ang expression ni Zilas pagkatapos niya 'yung lunukin.

“ No, I like this sweetie. I love the — uhm.. the taste. ” He obviously lied about it, but Calliope seems to bite at the statement so she just smiled and continued eating. The whole time, Zilas avoided the rice with sardine broth. He even set them to the farthest of side of his plate so it won't touch the rest of his rice.

After all of us ate, Zilas helped me place the dishes in the sink while Calliope was playing with his phone in the living room. He even helped me wash the plates we used. I thought he doesn't know how to do chores, I guess I was wrong. He was the one who wipe the dishes and placed them back in their respective drawers or shelf.

“ Calliope is a sweet child, ” He suddenly spoke as I was cleaning the sink, my daughter is the sweetest. I'm proud of her and I love her so much.

“ She is, Calliope is the reason why I do my best everyday.” I answered him with a smile in my face, Calliope is the only reason why I strive harder each day.

“ You're a good father, Clio. ” I don't know where that came from but the moment Zilas said it my heart felt like it was squeeze by something. No one have ever told me I was a good father for my daughter, I always blame myself for not giving her a nice life and a great childhood with a complete family. I always blame myself whenever she has a fever and I can't take her to hospital because we don't have enough money, I always blame myself for not providing her wants because I can't.

My eyes was watering, so I looked away from him. I'm in the verge of crying. Fuck!

“ Clio... ” He called my name softly.

Zilas pulled me in for a hug while my hands were still wet, his head is on my chest and arms around my waist. It was warm and comforting.

“ I love you, ” He whispered to which I just ignored. I did not respond to him.

Zilas is just confused. What his feeling right now is not love, it's a pity for someone pitiful like me. I shouldn't assume things or I'll get hurt again.

“ Clio, you're so precious. I love you. ” He caress my cheeks and went for a kiss. It was full of emotion, his lips against mine feels so right yet my brain screams for me to stop because just like what happened to my ex, he's going to abandon me when my heart already belongs to him.

“ I won't force you, Clio. I won't force my emotions on you, I'll wait for your heart to open its doors for me. I will be patient for you because that's how much I love you.” He whispered after our kiss ended. His words sounds so sincere, it made me think that I'll be happy if I give this love a chance. But no, Zilas is someone I can't reach. I can't love him.

“ Zilas, you're just confused. ” I whispered just enough for him to hear me.

“ Yes, I'm confused. I'm confused about why you can't love me. I'm beautiful, I'm rich, I'm sexy. I have the money to make you a billionaire. Why? Just why? Why can't you return my love? But I'm swallowing all those questions and insecurities because I can't force you. I can't. I need to be patient because I know you've been hurt. I need to be patient because I love you. ” It was an unexpected outburst from him, he looked hurt and frustrated. As if he was aiming to have something he knew he couldn't reach.

“ Why do you even love me? ” I asked him. To be fair we've only met like 4 or 5 days ago. Why does he love me so much?

“ Because.... It's because.. ” he was fidgeting his finger like he was trying to hide something or he doesn't want to disclose such information.

“ If you can't answer that then I don't think I'll ever love you, why would I even love someone who can't even tell me why he feels that way. ” I turned around and continued cleaning off the sink, I let the water down as Zilas was still beside me with his head down.

“ It's— Uhmm.. it's because you shookmeberginity. ” I couldn't understand the latter part of his statement, he suddenly spoke too fast with a low voice. Tingnan ko siya with one of my brows up to show my confusion.

“ What?! I can't hear you.”
