the car ride to the basket game after what had just happened was akward to say the least. the tension in the air was so thick you could cut a knife throught it. nessa tried to think of something to say to break the silence, but the only thing she remembered was every little detail shed noticed about lynns face. like how her left dimple always showed slightly more than her right whenever she smiled, or her naturally long lashes that were longer than nessas even when she wore mascara.
lynn blankly stared out the window, trying to act like the million thoughts spinning inside her head werent making her insane. not being able to read the signs in front of her or understand what her heart was trying to tell her, made her not even notice the loud silence. she was too distracted by all the voices shouting in her mind. as much as she wanted to be with nessa, there was a part of her that would rather die than tell her how she actually felt. why was it so hard for her to just let it out so she could stop torturing herself?
nessa sat on the edge of her seat watching the team play. well, more like a player on the team. that being the one with number 1 on her back. she could see lynn bring her hands up to her braids to see if they were staying in place every once in a while. nessa smiled to herself, slightly blushing at how good lynn looked whilst having her full focus on the game.
just like lynn had said, they won the game. nessa waited outside scrolling on her phone, quickly losing her interest in it when a certain person with open arms jogged towards her. with no hesitation she accepted it, allowing her to spin her around.
"you were amazing" her grip around the athletes neck was firm, not wanting to let go. it was moments like these she knew why she couldnt move on. because lynns arms around her waist felt so right.
"told you i never lose" lynn took a moment to think about what she just did. run towards another person to hug them? she wouldve laughed at herself 6 months ago. but the thing was it wasnt just another person.
it was nessa.
her nessa.
they slightly pulled away from each other, a comfortable silence washing over them. again, their faces were so close they could feel the others breath on their skin. nessas heartbeat stayed at its usual pace, but lynn couldnt say the same. she felt like she shrunk under the other girls gaze. an unusual, but familiar feeling formed in her stomach. often she wondered if nessa was aware of the constant chokehold she had on her, or how she made her nervous when she did the simple act of asking a question.
nessa took the time to build up her confidence to say whats on her mind. "you look very pretty" she studied her features like she was a painting or the night sky, unable to pull her eyes away. lynns cheeks flushed red and she broke eye contact to make it less visible. "i mean it" nessa grabbed her hand to get her attention back. lynn muttered a small 'thank you', not able to think of anything else appropiate to say.
nessa saying this didnt help lynn in any way. pretty? no one had really told her she looked pretty before. people were mostly complimenting her sports accomplishments, never her looks.
a tight lipped smile nessa couldnt stop formed on her face. lynns eyes widened a little, a small wave of panic rushing over her. "do i have something on my face?" the uneasiness in her voice was clear as she snached her hand out of nessas to bring it up to her face. "no no, i didnt say that" a confused laugh escaped nessa.
"should we go?" nessa questioned, reciving a nod from lynn, who grabbed her bag that had been put on the ground next to them.
30 minutes later they arrived at the same small lake they swam in earlier in the spring, but this time a bit further towards the woods where there was a wharf. luckily, the water had gotten warmer the last few weeks, so hopefully they wouldnt freeze as long afterwards as they did last time.
nessa pulled her tshirt over her head, already having her bikini under. "hurry up!" she impatiently walked around the bench theyd settled down on. "relax, im ready" the athlete held up her hands in defense.
nessa ran straight up to the wharf and climbed up the ladder, with lynn following close behind. it was only about 6 feet down to the water and they could feel the sun burning on their backs.
"after you" lynn stood in front of the ladder where they climbed up, leaving only one way down. "how thoughtful of you" nessa smiled sarcastically. without giving it another thought, she turned around and ran towards the end, eventually feeling the chilly water around her body. the second she turned around she was met with a splash in the face. "well thank you" she playfully rolled her eyes and laughed, unsure if lynn even heard her due to being underwater.
"this isnt cold" lynn exclaimed when her head came up from the water. "never said it was" nessa laughed in response. the next thing she remembered is lynn laughing hysterically at her smudged mascara. "come on, its not that funny" she tried her best to sound annoyed, but couldnt fight back her smile and soon enough they were both trying their best to keep themselves floating in the water whilst swimming towards land again.
they played around for another 20 minutes before the sun was covered by clouds and to water became could so they decided on getting up.
"you look like a panda" lynn laughed as she pulled out a red towel from her bag and wrapped it around her body. "eh do not" the other girl scoffed even tho she knew the athlete was right. "at least pandas are cute" lynn had no idea where the sudden confidence came from. nessa was taken aback by the unexpected comment, a small smile forming on her lips.
they stayed silent, processing what was just said until nessa broke the silence. "we can go my place if you want to?" lynn nodded whilst drying the bottom part of her ponytail. even tho she didnt show it, she was exited to see her room from the inside and not just from outside the window.
