I smiled and looked at my friends, who were also in costumes. It was Halloween and a bit over two weeks since we had been forced away from Yale. During that time, we had been using the Magic Locator to give each person with magic a charm. We decided to go out that night because it would be easier to blend in. Rather than holding sacks of candy, we had charms. Of course, we probably did look too old to be trick or treating. The first person we had found with the Magic Locator was an elderly woman named Samantha who lived by herself. All of her family had been captured all ready and she figured it was only a matter of time before she was found too. As a way of thanking us for giving her a charm, she let us move in for a bit. We were all relieved since we had know idea where we were going to stay. We walked out of Samantha's house, bidding her farewell. She was sad to see us leave, since we had told her we had to go somewhere else. We couldn't stay in one place for too long. I slipped the Magic Locator out of my pocket. My phone rang. I glanced at it. I frowned. Thomas again? Jamie asked telepathically. Yeah, I responded. I put my phone away and turned the Magic Locator on. The nearest person with magic is .5 miles away. We should still take the car in case any of the others are further, I signed. The others nodded and we got in the car. Jamie drove and I gave her directions. Soon, we pulled up to a nice-looking house. We all got out of the car. There were a few kids milling around, knocking on doors. Our target, however, was clear. Amelia walked ahead of the rest of us, since she usually spoke first. We stood on the porch and she knocked. A middle aged woman opened the door. "Why, you girls look quite old to be trick or treating." Amelia smiled. "We aren't trick or treating. I am Lydia and these are Kate, Scarlett, and Amy." She gestured at each of us in turn. We had decided to give everybody our fake names just in case. The woman looked confused. "I'm Wren. Why are you here then?" Lilly's eyes darted around then she spoke. "We know you have magic. We do too. Can we come in?" Wren was taken aback. "Of course." She ushered us in then shut the door. Jamie smiled. "We will of course show you proof of our magic." She summoned her flame and made her wings appear. Amelia turned invisible, Lilly made her wings visible and made one of the light bulbs swell to the point that it nearly shattered, and I collected the moisture in the air and formed it into a ball of water. Wren smiled. "Thank you. I am concerned, though. How did you find me?" A man around her age walked in. "Who are they, honey?" His face was guarded. Amelia blinked back into sight. The man seemed startled. "To answer both of your questions, I can turn myself and others invisible. Scarlett is a light fairy hybrid, Jamie is a fire dragon hybrid, and Amy is a mermaid hybrid. She is also mute. We found you by using a Magic Locator." We of course felt bad about lying, but it was for our safety. Wren looked concerned. The man put an arm around her. "I am her husband, Steve. Why are you here?" I smiled and opened up my bag, revealing the charms. Some people didn't realize what they were, but Wren and Steve did. "You are giving these out? How did you get so many?" Jamie shrugged. "It doesn't matter. For the last few weeks, we have been giving everyone with magic a charm. Does anyone else live here?" Steve and Wren beamed. "Yes, actually. You see, we have two children. A daughter named Beatrice and a son named Tobias. We acquired two charms from a friend. They are now staying with that friend. We wanted them to be safe. We knew that, even though they have charms, we do not. Therefore, it was not safe for them to stay with us. Now, they will be able to come back home," Steve said. The four of us shared a smile. This wasn't the first family we had brought back together. We gave them each a charm then left the house. Our next destination was only a couple blocks away. This time, a girl who seemed about 10 opened the door. She was holding a bag of candy. She, too, seemed confused by our age. Amelia opened her mouth to speak, but the girl pointed to her ear. I stepped forward. No problem! We all know ASL, I signed. The girl smiled. That's wonderful! You don't seem to be here for candy. Lilly stepped forward next. Correct. We are here because we have magic and you do too. The girl's eyes widened. I will be right back with my parents. She shut the screen door, but the main one was still open. I could see her signing rapidly. Mother. Father. There are four women at the door. They claim to have magic. The two adults quickly followed her back. "Come in," the man said. We did, and this time they closed the main door too. The woman smiled, but it seemed forced. "I am Victoria Sinclair. My husband's name is David. We are both telepaths along with our other magic, of course. I can send visions to those asleep and David can send visions to those awake. We are a perfect pair. Our daughter is Elliana. She can interpret dreams." Suddenly there was a serious look on the little girl's face. As random as they may seem, all dreams have a meaning, she signed. Jamie smiled. "I am Kate. I am a fire dragon hybrid. My sister, Amy, is a mermaid hybrid. We too are telepathic. If the Hybrid Hunters somehow find you and ask questions, please tell them that Amy is mute." She gestured to me. I signed everything that was said, so Elliana could keep up. Victoria looked confused. "Why, may I ask, are you pretending to be mute?" I sighed. "It's a long story." She clearly wasn't satisfied, but she let it go. Amelia turned invisible then reappeared right in front of Elliana. My name is Lydia, she signed. The girl looked up at her in admiration and signed, That's a pretty name. You have cool magic too! Could you turn me invisible too? Amelia nodded and took her hand. Both girls disappeared. A moment later, they became visible across the room. I like that a lot! Elliana signed. David and Victoria looked very happy. Lilly stepped forward next and let her delicate wings appear. She signed to Elliana, My name is Scarlett. I am a light fairy hybrid. She formed a ball of light in her hands. Elliana seemed mesmerized. "I don't mean to seem rude, but why are you here? How did you find us?" I continued to sign the words for Elliana. She looked appreciative. "We used a Magic Locator because we have something for you," Jamie said. Once again, I opened the bag to show the charms. Elliana was confused, but David and Victoria clearly realized what they were. I handed Victoria three of them. She put one in her pocket and gave the other two to her daughter and husband. What is this for, Mother? Elliana signed. Victoria knelt down and signed, It will protect you. As long as you have it, a Magic Locator can't find you anymore. The girl started bouncing a bit. She ran and gave each of us a hug. "Bye the way," Jamie said, looking at David. "We have fake identities. Our real names are Jamie, Ella, Amelia, and Lilly. I just wanted you to know. Can you tell that to Wren and Steve as well?" He nodded. We said goodbye then turned to leave. "Wait!" David called. "I almost forgot. Can we have two more? My telepathic partner, Noah and Victoria's partner, Catherine will need them too." Of course, I signed. I took two more out of the bag and placed them in David's hand. We continued to drive around for the next several hours. At the end of the night, we celebrated. Our first bag of charms was empty.
