I was dreading seeing Thomas again. He hadn't been there on Tuesday. Chris told me that he was sick. I'm glad I hadn't needed to face him yet. I had practically run out of the restaurant after we kissed. He texted me, but I didn't respond. I held my breath when Jamie and I walked over to the table in the courtyard that we always sat at with our friends. I was almost hoping that Thomas would still be sick. He wasn't. He came up to me, smiling as always "Can we talk?" I set my food down then followed him. "You are kinda giving me mixed signals, Ella. The truth is, I like you a lot. I have for years. I like that you can take my teasing. I like that you don't let anyone walk all over you. You are so so beautiful." I smiled. "I like you a lot too, Thomas. I'm just...not used to thinking of you this way. I need to take this slow." He hugged me. "I would wait years for you."

During Choir that afternoon, Director Blake gave us a lot of praise. "I heard your performance on Monday night went well. I am very proud of you all. I apologize that I wasn't able to make it. I made cookies for you all. " She passed out the cookies. Jaylin, Lilly, and I were sitting together. "I'm excited to work with you, Jaylin," I said. She smiled. "I am too. How are things with Thomas? I think everyone in the restaurant noticed that kiss, honey." I blanched. "I wasn't thinking! Anyway, we agreed to take things slow." Jaylin shook her head in disbelief. "If there was a man that hot interested in me, I would go right for it. You must still be in denial." I laughed sheepishly. "I know I'm hopeless. The rest of the period went quick. Once I finished my homework, I texted Thomas.
Want to work on the project?
Yeah. When and where?
My dorm at 7?
Sounds good.
See you then.
I was a mess when waiting for Thomas to come. "Ella, you can do this. Thomas is a good guy. He told you earlier that he likes you." I turned around and held up my hands. "Look at them! How can I play my flute when my hands are shaking this bad?" Jamie put her hands on my shoulders and looked me in the eyes. "Ella, you need to calm down. Get your music out. Grab a pencil. Open the music making app on your phone. Get started. I know that your love for music will calm you down." I nodded slowly and got to work. When Thomas arrived, Jamie let him in and led him to the couch where I was sitting. "Hello Thomas. I am getting started on our 20 measures. I was thinking that each of us could write both parts for 10 measures." He nodded and sat down beside me. "Good idea." The time flew by. We worked hard, coming up with the extra 20 measures. We goofed around too, though. Thomas started making weird noises with his mouthpiece. I laughed a lot. We perfected playing the part we wrote. "This is a good start," I said. I looked at my phone for the time. "Shit, it's late. You should probably leave." He acted as if he was offended. "Trying to get rid of me already, Bella?" I hugged him. "I wish you didn't have to leave." He chuckled. " I'll see you tomorrow." I smiled. "Okay. Bye." I said. That night, I fell asleep with a smile on my face.
