Taehyung gripped the steering wheel of his worn-out sedan, his knuckles white against the leather. The engine hummed a comforting tune, the only sound piercing the quiet night. His eyes remained glued to the road ahead, reflecting the yellow streetlights that passed by in a hypnotic rhythm. His thoughts swirled like the leaves caught in the car's wake, a tempest of doubt and anticipation. It was the kind of evening that made the world feel both vast and suffocatingly small.

In the backseat, two furry companions lay curled up in a warm, sleeping ball. Bam, the Doberman, took up more than his fair share of the space, his deep breaths punctuating the silence with a gentle rumble. Yeontan, the Pomeranian, was nestled against him, her tiny snores a counterpoint to his steadfast calm. They were an unlikely duo, their sizes and dispositions starkly contrasting, yet they shared a bond as unshakeable as Taehyung's determination to reach their home which was a bit far from where he is right now.

The car's headlights threw a narrow beam onto the asphalt, illuminating the way through the inky blackness. The occasional car passed by, their lights briefly piercing the solitude like the gleam of a distant lighthouse. Each one brought a momentary sense of comfort, a fleeting connection to the outside world. Taehyung's mind wandered, his thoughts veering from the warmth of his pets to the cold, empty house waiting for them.

A sudden jolt brought him back to the present. The car had hit a pothole, jolting him from his introspection. He slowed down, cursing under his breath at the state of the road. Rain had started to patter against the windshield, the first drops of a storm that had been threatening all evening. The wipers swiped back and forth, their metronome rhythm setting his nerves on edge. He checked the gas gauge; it hovered just above empty. He hoped the last station before the highway was still open.

The lights of the gas station glowed like a beacon in the distance. He let out a sigh of relief, his heart rate slowing. Pulling in, he filled the car up and took a moment to stretch his legs, feeling the chill of the rain against his skin. Bam and Yeontan stirred in the back, sensing the change in their surroundings. He petted them absently, trying to soothe his own anxiety as much as theirs.

Back on the road, the rain grew heavier, the windshield wipers struggling to keep up. The droplets grew into a wall of water, blurring the lines between the road and the darkness beyond. Taehyung's grip tightened on the wheel, his eyes narrowing as he focused on the dim glow of the taillights ahead. The silence was broken only by the steady swish of the wipers and the occasional bark from Bam, who didn't appreciate being jolted awake.

Then, in the rearview mirror, a set of red and blue lights appeared, growing larger by the second. His heart skipped a beat. He checked his speed, his eyes darting to the dashboard. He was well within the limit. Yet, the siren grew louder, the urgent wail slicing through the rain-soaked night. His mind raced, trying to recall if he'd made any mistakes, if there was any reason for this unwelcome attention.

Pulling over, Taehyung's hand hovered over the window control, his palms slick with sweat. The police cruiser pulled in behind him, casting an eerie glow through the rain. He took a deep breath, preparing for the worst. The door of the cruisher opened, and a figure emerged, silhouetted by the strobing lights. The officer approached, rainwater beading on their hat, and tapped on the window. He rolled it down, the cold air slapping his face like a wet towel.

"License and registration, please," the officer's voice was firm but not unkind. Taehyung's hands trembled as he fumbled through the glove compartment, finally finding the documents. He handed them over, trying to keep his voice steady. "Is there a problem, officer?"

The policeman took the papers, shining a flashlight on them. "Your tail light's out, sir. Did you know that?"

Taehyung felt a surge of relief, his shoulders dropping. "No, I didn't. It must have happened on the way here."
