Me and Gregg spent the rest of the afternoon working on finishing a few odd bits and pieces. It went fairly quickly and I was keen to leave on time as I wanted to make sure I was ready to go around to Mike's house.
"Where are you off to in such a hurry?" asked Gregg as I packed my stuff away with lightening speed. "Never you mind" I smirked at him and left him staring after me.
"See you tomorrow" I yelled as I went down the corridor. I pulled my phone from my bag as I walked and dialled Mikey's number.
"Hey babe" I said as he answered before it even started ringing properly.
"Hey you" he said.
"I'm done for the day"
"Ok, so you coming round now?"
"I thought I'd get changed first if that's ok?"
"Sure. You want me to come and pick you up?"
"Hmmm that might be nice. Give me about an hour?"
"An hour?"
I laughed, "I have to negotiate the Dublin traffic to get home first"
"Oh yeah, good point. Ok I'll pick you up in about an hour"
"Bye"
"Bye"
I ended the call and fished my car keys from my bag. I got in my car and started the journey back home. The traffic as predicted was pretty awful and I got back to mine with about fifteen minutes to spare. I had a quick shower and washed my hair, then got changed quickly into a dark pair of smart jeans and a fitted t-shirt.
Casual but reasonably sexy... I didn't have time to straighten my hair so I ruffled it into something that resembled a style and put a slick of lip gloss. I was just making my way downstairs when the doorbell rang.
*Rinnnnnnnnnnng*
I picked my bag up off the sideboard where I'd left it and opened the door. "Hey babe" He greeted me with a kiss. "Hey yourself" I smiled as I kissed him back. "You ready?"
I nodded. "I think so"
"Let's go" he put his arm around me as I locked the front door then led me to his car. He opened the passenger door. "Your chariot Madame"
"Wally" I said as I hit him lightly on the arm. "Nice car!" I remarked as I got into the black Mercedes. "Thanks" he said as he got into the drivers seat.
And she says baby it's 3 am I must be lonely
I looked at Mike as he started up the car and the stereo kicked in. Matchbox Twenty were one of my favourite bands. But most people had never heard of them...
"Ah the delectable Mr. Thomas" I sighed as Mike pulled a face. But I was curious to see his reaction. "Hmmm competition?" he said.
"I'm joking" I said as I reached over and squeezed his hand on the gearstick. "But I can't believe you have them playing in your car. I thought no one had heard about them, apart from me!"
"Haha I thought the same about me, I try to educate the rest of the lads, but fail miserably every time" I laughed as we pulled away.
She thinks that happiness is a mat that sits on her doorway, and outside it's stopped raining, and she says baby
I smiled as Mike sang along with the CD and joined in quietly. "I love your voice you know" I said.
"Really?"
"Yeah it's brilliant" I stopped myself short of telling him that I had his solo album and played it constantly, not sure what his reaction would be to that!
"Thanks babe"
We started singing along again. "You know you've not got a bad voice yourself" he said.
I blushed. "Thanks"
"I think you and your mate should've pushed harder with that..."
"Hmmm maybe" I said. "I love what I do now though"
"What? Song writing?"
"No I got into that kind of by accident" I said as Mike opened the gates to his driveway with a remote key fob that he picked up off his dashboard. We pulled into the driveway and Mike looked at me confused as he parked the car.
"It's a long story" I smiled, "let me tell you inside"
"Ok babe"
About ten minutes later, I was settled on one of Mike's sofa with a large glass if wine. He had his arm around me and I laid my head on his shoulder. "So, how long have you got?!" I asked. He laughed, "All night babe!"
So I relayed to him the abbreviated version of my career. "I honestly didn't know you were an author" he said. "It's fine Mike" I laughed at his worried face. "Honestly" "I don't actually think I'm that well published in Ireland"
"Are you not originally from round here then?"
I grinned. "Do I sound Irish to you?"
"Well, er no. I guess not" he smiled. "I used to live in London, with Adam. It's where we started the whole music thing, and that's where I started writing and got my publishing deal"
"Anyway to cut a long story short. Gregg read my first novel and thought I should have a go at song writing" I grinned, "I largely ignored him. "Then I moved over here a good few years ago. Adam was seeing a girl he met in LA and spent a lot of his time away, so I fancied a change"
"The thing is, I still have a UK publisher, and I fly back to the UK regularly for meetings with them. Since I've lived here, I've tried to get an Irish publishing house interested in me. But at the moment, it's not really happening"
"But having said, I put my last book on hold. I haven't finished the first draft yet. I was struggling to be honest..."
"Then I got the call from Gregg and everything changed"
