Did he cry because of the loss of his friend?
He was too occupied with the betrayal from his friend.
Did he cry because of the betrayal of his friend?
He was too distressed over his father's betrayal.
Did he cry because of his father's betrayal?
He was too conflicted to cry over anything.

The world of white had become deadly silent as Kiyotaka stood alone in the empty room. Kiyotaka simply stared forward, his eyes having lost all former luster. The tears which had fallen earlier had stopped flowing for a while now. He had cried and cried, letting loose every one of his regrets. Now, he just felt tired.
Kiyotaka stood in the same spot. He stood completely still. Maybe if he tried hard enough, stayed still enough, he would witness the return of Shiro and Yuki. A return where all that had happened would vanish. Of course, he knew that would never happen. This was no fairytale with a happy ending. This was reality with its cruel scythe, reaping all as it creeped ever onward. He had read it over and over in fiction, and yet, he never thought that it would come to fruition.
And so, Kiyotaka wallowed with his lusterless eyes. It was after several hours that Kiyotaka heard a door open. It was an instructor.
"It's lights out in 10 minutes, get to your room," the instructor said indifferently.
The instructor turned to leave. However, Kiyotaka grabbed his arm.
"Wait...can...can I speak with father?" Kiyotaka asked, not looking into the instructor's eyes.
"...Get to bed."
The instructor shook off Kiyotaka and walked out the door. Kiyotaka headed to his room and found that Shiro wasn't there. Even when lights out hit, Shiro didn't return. Kiyotaka stared up at the ceiling, eventually his exhaustion took hold of him and he passed out.
The following morning, Kiyotaka was called to his father's office. Kiyotaka walked inside and stared at his father who was sitting at his desk doing paper work.
"You wished to speak with me?" His father asked coldly, not even looking t him.
Kiyotaka was surprised by his behavior, but he continued forward.
"Is...is Yuki really gone?"
"Of course she is, she failed after all."
"Huh?" Kiyotaka was surprised by his father's cold answer.
"She was worthless, so she was eliminated. I'm sure Shiro will follow soon, whether it be of his own accord or simply failing to keep up."
"Father..."
"Are you really torn up over those worthless individuals leaving? Their leave will let you excel even more."
"They were my friends though!"
"Friends? Friends are unnecessary. They are only a waste of time."
"How could you say that!? You were kind to them all the time before now!"
"Mere deception, we couldn't let the subjects know they were simply used for data collection."
"You're lying..." Kiyotaka shook his head, denying his father.
"Lying? Aren't you rather skilled at detecting lies? Do you sense any lies now? Do you Kiyotaka?"
Kiyotaka went silent. He couldn't. He didn't sense a single lie.
