By the time lunch came around, I'd done enough dodging around for a lifetime. After Lucas skimpered off, I was too nervous to talk to Pablo. Some part of me wanted to stay and there what he had to say, but the other part reminded me that I was mad at him, and he looked pretty damn hot when he was pissed.

Was?

He probably still is.

But that's besides the point.

"Madison?"

I freeze in my position, slumped in one of the library couches at school with nothing in my hands to hide myself.

When I see Courtney round the bookshelf corner, my shoulders instantly relax and I cave into the cushions beneath me. A breath of relief washes through me and I stare at Courtney as she approaces me with her eyebrows raised.

"Hey," I breathe.

"What is Madison Lockey doing in a library?" She presses, an amused smile on her face.

I roll my eyes at her omnicence and look back at her, "Would you believe me if I said I was studying?"

She shakes her head, "With that imaginary Chem book in your hands? Nope."

"Guess you know me better than anyone," I say after I let out a shakey laugh.

Courtney clicks her tongue, something she does when she's annoyed or in agreement with something someone has said. "So what are really doing here?"

"I'm avoiding Pablo..." I quip shortly, biting my lip as soon as those words come out of my mouth.

Admitting that aloud made me feel even more awkward than ever.

Courtney's face furrows up, "How the hell could you do that if you live with him?"

"Oh, trust me, it takes a lot of effort." I add, avoiding her question cause I honestly had no idea if it was even possible.

She smirks at my answer just as a couple embracing each other walks past the isle slowly. A slight pang effects my beating heart when my eyes identify that long, brown cascading hair as Makayla's. She has her hands wrapped tightly around Lucas's neck and they seem to be sharing a 'so called moment' together, gazing into each other's eyes.

As they disappear past our isle, Courtney lifts a hand up to her mouth and makes a fake barfing sound.

Although Courtney's reaction brings a small smile to my face, the overall image of Lucas touching Makayla in general sticks to my memory like super glue and cloth.

The overwhelming feeling of betrayal when Makayla chose to believe Lucas's story over my very true one rushes back to me. I close my eyes, trying to block it all out, hoping that with my lids closed the blackness could help me move from this point.

However, it didn't seem to do any good. The only thing that helped me snap out of it was Courtney's hand touching my shoulder.

My eyes jolt open and I stare at her, taking in that sympathetic face of hers. I shake my head, wanting that to vanish from her face as welll.

"Don't do that," I say hoarsely.

Courtney blinks as a flash of understanding crosses her features. Just as quickly as the expression came, it vanishes and is replaced with a somewhat forced smile.

She stands up tall and jerks her head towards the exit of the library, "Let's get out of here."

I don't even hesitate before I get up and follow suite. I needed a distraction, and running seemed like the best option to me.
