Kai stumbled backward, his eyes wide with fear as he realized the edge of the roof was mere inches away. He looked down, his heart racing at the sheer height of the building. "Your father-" Just as the words escaped his mouth, Jennie rushed forward and grabbed his collar, pulling him back from the edge.
Kai's arms wrapped around her waist, clinging to her tightly as he buried his face in her neck. "Thank you," he whispered.
Jennie pushed him away roughly, still gripping his collar. "What were you saying? About my father?"
Kai swallowed hard, his eyes darting between Jennie's intense gaze and the ground. "It... it was your father's dying wish that we get married," he blurted out. "He made me promise to always protect you and-"
"Lies!" Jennie hissed, shaking him roughly. "My father would never..." She trailed off, uncertainty flickering in her eyes. Kai reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled letter. "He wrote it down. He made me swear.
Jennie snatched the letter from Kai's hand, her fingers trembling as she unfolded it. Her eyes scanned the pages, her face pale as she read the words.
The handwriting was unmistakably her father's. As she read, tears welled up in her eyes. 'Kai, I leave my beloved daughter in your care. Promise me you'll take care of her and marry her, no matter what.'
Meanwhile, downstairs, Lisa punched Chanyeol squarely in the face for the last time. "I'm done with your nonsense!" she snapped before storming off. She made her way to the rooftop where Rosé, Jimin, and Jungkook were already gathered.
Lisa joined them at the edge, following their gaze and found Kai and Jennie stood.
"This motherf-"
Jungkook's hand clamped over her mouth, pulling her back. "Shh, don't interrupt. It's serious," he whispered.
They watched as Jennie read something from a piece of paper, her face a mask of shock and disbelief. "What is even going on?" Lisa whispered, craning her neck to see better. "We don't know," Rosé replied softly.
Just then, Jennie let out a choked sob and kneeled down on the floor. "Unnie," Lisa muttered, trying to wriggle free from Jungkook's grasp.
"We need to go down there," Jimin said, his brow furrowed with worry.
Just as they were about to move, Jisoo appeared at the rooftop door with Jin by her side. "What's happening?" she asked, her eyes scanning the group. Hoseok and RM arrived shortly after, looking just as confused as the others.
"Where's V?" Rosé asked, her voice laced with urgency. "We need him." Jimin glanced around, licking his lower lip. "I don't know, he was just here a minute ago..."
"He went with Suga to diffuse the bombs planted in the building," Jisoo replied, her expression grave. "They left a few minutes ago." A collective gasp echoed through the group. "Bombs?" Jungkook exclaimed, his eyes wide.
"Yes," Jisoo confirmed. "Suga found them earlier while he was checking the building's security."
Jennie's grip on the letter loosened as she stumbled back, her free hand coming up to cover her mouth.
Just as the crumpled paper hit the floor, the rooftop door banged open. Taehyung and Suga rushed in, slowly taking in the surroundings.
Everyone standing motionless, Jennie in the middle of the rooftop kneeling down and Kai standing in front of her.
Taehyung's gaze zeroed in on Jennie, her tear-streaked face and crumpled letter on the floor. "Princess," he whispered, his eyebrows furrowing as he stepped forward.
