Kaden's POV:

As I waited for the first soldier to be teleported into the training grounds to test his abilities to protect my daughter, I couldn't help but feel giddy about how smart and amazing my mate, my wife was for creating such a complex cube of pure magic to make these training mini dimensions.

She was the epitome of brilliance.

A soldier appeared.

Wolfsbane brushed the air.

Subtle.

Then it was gone.

"What's your name, soldier?"

"Jesse Valykris, My King."

That made me pause.

Valykris.

The House of Edward Valykris was one of the oldest vampyre covens in the kingdom.

Powerful.

Proud.

Dangerous.

Being the King of Covens, Edward was always respectful, but I'd only seen him a handful of times over the centuries.

"And yet here you stand as a soldier," I said.

Jesse's expression didn't change.

"I prefer service to inheritance, Sire."

Now I was intrigued.

"The last son."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"The chosen successor."

A flicker of annoyance crossed his face before he masked it.

"My father's choice."

Not yours.

I understood immediately.

Good.

"How old are you Jesse?"

"Twenty-two, sire."

"How long have you been a soldier?"

"Since I was eligible at eighteen."

"Under whose command?"

"General Fallow, Your Grace."

General Fallow sent me the heir of House Valykris and said nothing.

Interesting.

"To have impressed General Fallow enough to be recommended speaks highly of you."

"You're much too kind, Your Majesty."

Polite.

Controlled.

Annoyed by attention.

Even better.

"Enough talk. Shall we begin?"

"Yes, sire."

He drew his sword.

Wolfsbane touched the air again.

I smiled.

"I thought so, Enchanted sheath?"

"Yes, sire"

"Silver blade?"

"Yes, sire"

"A noble heir carrying tools meant to kill his own kind."

"I carry what works."

I laughed.

I liked him already.
