"What are you saying, Bondita?", asked a concerned Sumati ma, while I found myself speechless, trying to figure out what exactly was going on in her head.
"Maa, I don't want to marry your jamai babu.", Bondita reiterated her declaration which cracked me up. She was denying my marriage proposal; at the same time addressing me as her mother's son-in-law. Evidently she was angry and nothing else. I took the call to pacify her.
My laughter caused worry to the members of our family except Bondita, who blew her cheeks up.
"Anirudh, Bondita, what's happening? What are you both up to?", my father sought clarification.
"Baba, my fiancé is angry with me.", I stated, looking at Bondita in amusement. "Without any second thought you proceed with the wedding preparations. I will handle the bride."
"My bahu is right in her place. You always keep troubling her. Now go and convince.", remarked kaka.
"But what did I even do?", I asked being baffled.
"In the court, at least the magistrate will clearly give the reason for punishing a culprit. Here I am not even informed about my mistake and directly being punished. Anyway, it's your bahu's court today.", I snapped at kaka and followed Bondita to her room.
She stood by the window, puffing up her cheeks. As much as I wanted to squeeze and kiss them, I restrained myself taking a deep breath.
"What happened, Bondita? Why are you angry?", I went and stood opposite to her.
She remained quiet. As a cue, I tapped on her cheeks and tenderly enquired, "Will you not tell me, sweetheart?"
"I won't tell.", was the answer I got before she blew her cheeks again.
"This is not done.", I stated, gently grasping her shoulders, "You should tell me what it is. Only then I will be able to resolve the issue."
Finally, she locked her eyes with mine and began to list out her complaints. "You didn't talk to me properly since the last two days. You didn't even involve me in your plan until I confronted you this morning. You didn't take me into your team. You didn't even smile at me properly."
My face beamed with love. I pulled her closer to me and enquired with affection, "So, my sweetheart has been missing my attention, is it?"
She regarded my question with a not so fiery yet cold look. "Keep distance, barrister babu.", she retorted sharply, pushing my hands off her shoulders.
"It is biristera babu, not barrister babu.", I reminded in a resonant voice, trying to hold her hand again.
"I'm not giving you permission to touch me. I too will keep you at a distance just like you did.", she heatedly declared.
"It is impossible.", I declared confidently.
A tricky idea had come to my mind which made me challenge, "I will maintain distance if that is what you want; but before I leave this room, you will close this gap between us yourself."
She opened her eyes wide and I gave a sly smile.
"There is no way my anger is going to subside.", Bondita stated resolutely, resting her hands on her hips.
"It's not an issue, sweetheart. I will happily let myself burn in the heat of your anger.", I stated softly and lovingly, causing her to smile, although it was barely noticeable.
I pulled a chair to sit and leaned back with arms under my head. "So, what else?", I raised my brows.
"I told I am not talking to you."
