Chapter 29: Grandmother's Hospitalization
Miao Jun instinctively furrowed his brow. "Made a bit of money?"
In the heart of Song Yimo, the Miao couple held a place of great esteem. She knew well that they valued her highly, and had she not clarified her situation, they would undoubtedly have offered to lend her money, just as they had in the past when they had nearly exhausted all their available funds for her sake.
Back then, despite Miao Jun facing severe ostracism at his new job and struggling to make ends meet, his concern for her had never wavered.
As people bustled around them, Song Yimo tugged at Miao Jun’s sleeve, leading him to a secluded spot outside the bustling hall to converse. "Miao Dad, I've mentioned my writing before; I’ve been earning from it."
Miao Jun looked taken aback. "With such a heavy load of high school studies, you still find time to write?"
"There’s always time if you squeeze it a bit," she replied, kicking a pebble at her feet, the words a well-worn cliché. "I haven’t fallen behind in my studies."
Given how close Yimo was with his daughter, Miao Jun was well aware of her academic performance. In a school of nearly eight hundred students divided into twelve classes, Song Yimo had ranked in the top twenty.
Writing required both mental effort and time, and Miao Jun couldn’t help but wonder if Song Yimo devoted all her time to her studies, wouldn’t she excel even further?
Yet, he understood the situation in the Song family. Aunt Song's illness was no trivial matter. Although the surgery was merely to remove a polyp, the doctor had made it clear that her gastritis required ongoing treatment, and that concerning dysplasia sounded rather dangerous. All of this would incur expenses.
Of course, he would lend a helping hand, but using his own money felt different from borrowing; even with the closeness he shared with the Song family, Song Yimo, just like her grandmother, would make sure every cent was accounted for, forever keeping that debt in mind.
Now that Song Yimo could earn for herself, Miao Jun genuinely felt this was a good thing. However, he also lamented that her divided focus might prevent her from achieving top marks.
After pondering for a moment, Miao Jun let out a sigh, “If you find yourself short on funds, be sure to let me know.”
“I will, Miao Dad.” Song Yimo felt a wave of relief wash over her. She was concerned that he might think she was neglecting her studies; in the eyes of adults, a student’s primary duty was to study hard, while making money could wait until adulthood.
But for her, the two were intertwined.
What was the purpose of studying?
To earn money!
If she could balance both studying and earning, why not take advantage of it?
Achieving first place in her grade and gaining admission to a top university was not just for the sake of knowledge; it was a pathway to a future where she could earn even more.
She could make over ten thousand a month, reaching her goals sooner than most!
After completing the hospitalization procedures and settling her grandmother in, Song Yimo remembered to buy her two vegetarian buns to enjoy at her leisure. With her experience, she managed the logistics efficiently, needing no assistance from Miao Jun and his wife.
"You stubborn child, are you really not going to let us help?" Song Yimo handed freshly washed apples to Miao Jun and his wife, then poured a glass of water for her grandmother. "There’s everything you need right by the hospital entrance. You can rent a thermos at the nurse’s station; it’s quite convenient."
