Chapter 54: Farewell, Results
Time always seems to pass slowly when you wish it would go faster, and flies by when you hope it would slow down, playing tricks on your expectations.
Song Yimo packed all the bottles and jars into a travel bag, filling it to the brim.
"I've taken some precautions, hoping they won't be broken by the rough handling at the airport."
She zipped up the bag, clapped her hands, and checked the time. "It's time to go."
Zhai Muyang had been watching her busy herself, and now he chuckled, "Yimo, you're so capable, I'm starting to worry someone will have designs on my sister."
"You're overthinking it, Grandma, Dage is leaving."
Grandma Song walked out from the inner room, holding a red envelope. "I never formally gave you a red envelope, here, take it."
Zhai Muyang wanted to refuse, as he couldn't accept money from an elderly person, but Song Yimo took it and stuffed it into his hand. "It's our custom here, receiving a grandson-in-law merits a red envelope, and marrying a daughter-in-law requires a change of address fee."
Can these two things be the same?
Zhai Muyang was at a loss, but he still accepted it. To him, this wasn't just a red envelope, it was a token of the elderly person's affection, something he cherished.
The days ahead were still long, with plenty of opportunities for repayment.
Grandma Song smiled as she saw him accept it, "Come visit during your days off, we have food and lodging here, it's just not fancy. Don't be picky."
"How can I be picky? I'll come by whenever I have time. You can tell me to stop when it's too much."
"I wouldn't get tired of you even if you stayed here every day." Grandma Song grinned and patted his hand, "Call us often."
Zhai Muyang replied softly, feeling a surge of emotion akin to the overflowing Yellow River. Since his mother's passing, this was the first time he had experienced such unfamiliar emotions.
Taking the bag from Song Yimo, he said, "No need to see me off, I'll flag down a taxi on the street and go straight to the airport. I'll call when I land."
Song Yimo wasn't one to dawdle, "It's at most a hundred yuan to the airport, so don't let the driver overcharge you."
Zhai Muyang tousled her hair, realizing that after all these years of venturing out on his own, he was now being given advice like a young man heading out for the first time. It felt fresh and heartwarming.
Descend a few flights of stairs, he glanced back at Yimo standing at the doorway, and waved, "Call me if you need anything, anytime. My phone is on 24/7."
"Got it." Song Yimo waved back, "Have a safe journey."
Watching him leave from the window, Song Yimo turned back to see Grandma tidying up the table, and she hurried over to help.
Sighing, Grandma Song said, "This household can only have more people, not fewer. It used to just be the two of us, but when Muyang was here for only a day, it suddenly felt empty when he left."
Song Yimo didn't know how to comfort her, so she just nodded in response.
"When you get married in the future, Grandma will be living alone. Ah, getting old is frightening."
"How could I leave you behind to get married? If I do marry, I'll bring you along to live with me."
Grandma Song chuckled, "I can't live with you, I know you're filial, but Grandma can't rely on your filial piety to disturb your life. It's enough for me that you have such intentions. Who knows, by then, maybe Grandma will have joined your Grandpa."
