~Chapter 4~
"Oh, your father," Chan nervously echoed. He dreaded this moment; he would rather keep Seungmin happy rather than have to share something that would upset him.
"What is it??" Seungmin nervously smiled at him, noticing that familiar, worried expression slowly overtake Chan's face.
"Nothing," Chan replied, mustering a smile while taking a deep breath as he pushed closer to the table. "Look, I'm really sorry...last night..." he quickly cleared his throat before continuing.
As a doctor, one learns that when delivering bad news to a patient's family, it's essential to remain calm and strong for them. You must understand what they're going through and be a supportive presence they can lean on in the most challenging moments of their lives. Be compassionate, but don't be emotional!!
Don't get emotional...how ironic. The most emotional person on this planet chose to become a doctor of all things. "It was sudden...but fortunately, Kim was on call and managed to get your father into surgery right away," Chan concluded, surprisingly keeping himself in check long enough to get through his spill. It helped that he avoided looking directly at Seungmin, kind of past him, trying to avoid the intensity of his eyes.
Seungmin shook his head—his habit. He also was trying to steady himself. "But...but he's gonna be okay, right??" he softly asked, looking up to Chan and attempting to keep a slight smile on his face, afraid of letting the fear take over.
"I can't update you on patient conditions unless directed by Doctor Kim. I'm still only an intern. But Kim is the best, so I'm sure he'll be fine," Chan reassured him with a gentle smile, reaching for his hand across the table to brush his fingers over his knuckles to comfort him.
"Hm, you're right...he's gonna be fine," Seungmin sniffled quickly, letting out a small laugh as he pulled his hand away and finished the last few bites of his meal.
"You didn't have any classes today??" Chan asked, eager to change the topic of the conversation.
"I do," Seungmin answered, raising his hand to cover his partially full mouth. "Just not until later," he added after swallowing.
"How much later?? It's almost 2:00 already," Chan furrowed his brows, lifting his wrist to read the clock.
"What!! Seriously??" Seungmin exclaimed, panicking as he jumped out of his chair and frantically gathered his trash to pile on his tray.
"Want me to take you??" Chan honestly offered, sensing his distress.
"No, I'll have a friend come get me...shit," he sighed, his hurried movements creating a bigger mess as he pulled his phone from his back pocket.
"Hey, relax," Chan chuckled softly at the younger. "I'll take care of this," he said, standing up and cleaning up their messes.
"But—"
"Seungmin, go to school," he said sternly but with a smile, gesturing his arm towards the exiting double doors.
"Yeah, okay...thank you," Seungmin replied shyly as he left. Chan hummed in response, smiling as he watched him rush out of the cafeteria, pulling out his phone to his ear, probably to call that friend.
"Dude!!" Chan heard a loud yell from behind him, quickly followed by a soft punch on his shoulder.
"Huh??" he replied, turning around. "Changbin??"
"Is this where you've been all this time??" Changbin laughed. "When Felix said you were on the third floor, I thought you were checking on Mr. Na in 1307."
