The mirror glowed faintly in Harry's quarters, its surface rippling as a new connection formed. Harry, sitting at his desk, leaned forward, intrigued. The Memory Keepers had mentioned that another sanctuary would soon be joining the network, but they hadn't provided many details.
The runes on the mirror pulsed, and a voice—calm but tinged with exhaustion—spoke.
"Is this the Memory Keepers network?"
Harry leaned closer. "Yes, it is. Who's speaking?"
"My name is Zhang Yi," the voice replied. "I'm contacting you from eastern China."
The mirror flickered, and an image began to form. Zhang Yi's face appeared, his features sharp and determined, though his eyes carried the weight of someone who had seen too much. Behind him, the background was dimly lit, revealing shelves packed with supplies and walls reinforced with what looked like steel plating.
Zhang Yi's Situation
"Zhang Yi," Harry said, sitting up straighter. "We've been waiting for you to join. How are things on your end?"
"Chaotic," Zhang Yi admitted. "The freeze has reached my region faster than expected. I've spent the past several weeks securing my shelter, ensuring it's stable enough to survive the worst of it. That's why it took so long for me to receive the mirror."
"What kind of shelter have you built?" Harry asked, curious.
Zhang Yi gestured behind him. "It's an underground facility, reinforced with steel and concrete. I've used a combination of magic and technology to create a self-sustaining environment. We have renewable energy, filtered water, and enough food to last for years."
"That's impressive," Harry said sincerely. "You've done a lot in a short time."
Zhang Yi nodded but didn't smile. "I had no choice. I lived through the freeze once before. I know what it can do."
Zhang Yi's Past and Power
Harry leaned forward, his expression intent. "You remember the previous timeline too?"
"Yes," Zhang Yi said quietly. "I died in it. When the freeze came, I was one of the survivors, scraping by in the ruins of the world. But no matter how hard I tried, it wasn't enough. The cold consumed everything. In the end, I froze to death alongside the last of my people."
Harry's chest tightened. He had heard similar stories from others in the network, but it never got easier to imagine. "And then you woke up?"
Zhang Yi's eyes darkened. "Yes. A year before the freeze began. At first, I thought it was a dream, but the memories didn't fade. I remembered everything—how I failed, what I lost. And then I realized I had been given something more than just memories. I had a... gift."
Harry frowned. "A gift?"
Zhang Yi nodded. "A power. I can enhance and create materials beyond normal limits—steel that's stronger than any spell, generators that never run out of energy, even enchanted barriers that amplify their own magic over time. It's like the freeze gave me the tools I needed to fight back."
The Challenges of Leadership
Zhang Yi's image shifted slightly as he adjusted the mirror. "But even with this power, it hasn't been easy. The people in my region are panicked, and the freeze has already claimed entire villages. I've been working to bring as many survivors into the shelter as I can, but resources are stretched thin."
Harry nodded, understanding the weight of leadership all too well. "You're not alone anymore, Zhang Yi. The Memory Keepers are here to help. We've connected sanctuaries across the world to share resources, knowledge, and support."
Zhang Yi's gaze softened slightly. "That's good to hear. I've been working in isolation for months, and the burden... it's heavy."
"It is," Harry agreed. "But that's why we're doing this—so no one has to carry it alone."
A New Connection
The conversation shifted to practical matters as Harry and Zhang Yi discussed the specifics of the Memory Keepers network. Zhang Yi explained how his shelter operated, detailing its advanced defenses and resource management systems. In return, Harry shared information about the dome and the magical protections that had made it possible.
"I'll link your mirror to the network," Harry said. "Once you're connected, you'll be able to communicate with the other sanctuaries directly."
Zhang Yi inclined his head. "Thank you, Harry Potter. Your dome is remarkable. It's inspiring to know that others are fighting as hard as we are."
"You're doing incredible work too, Zhang Yi," Harry said. "Your shelter sounds like a beacon of hope for your people."
Zhang Yi's expression softened. "Hope is all we have left. And I'll do whatever it takes to make sure we survive this time."
A Shared Purpose
As the connection faded, Harry sat back in his chair, the weight of the conversation settling over him. Zhang Yi's story was one of resilience and ingenuity, a testament to the strength of those fighting against the freeze.
In the face of overwhelming cold, they were building sanctuaries, forging connections, and creating a future worth living for.
And now, with Zhang Yi and his shelter part of the Memory Keepers, their network was stronger than ever.
The freeze was relentless, but so were they. Together, they would endure.
