Hecate couldn't help but smile at the joy filled expression on Calypso's face as she lay on her chest, hugging her tightly. They had enjoyed another wonderful dinner with Hecate's- With their family, and just as Nyx promised no one batted an eye.
Beyond the initial shock and realization of what they were seeing, Calypso got nothing but compliments on her bravery and beautiful scales, with one of the servants even offering to make her a special cream that could store moisture in her scales for long periods of time.
Now back in their room and snuggly tucked into bed, Calypso still couldn't remove the smile that had taken up residence on her face, even as she squeezed Hecate against herself.
"You know, we're supposed to be sleeping so we can do more things tomorrow. Right?" Hecate chuckled.
"I'm sorry. Am I keeping you awake?" Calypso asked.
"You literally haven't stopped purring since my mom hugged you." Hecate laughed.
The purring stopped for a moment like she was trying to stifle it before starting back up again like she couldn't help it. "I'm so sorry Katy, I really can't stop."
Hecate placed a gentle kiss atop her mermaid's head just beside her fin. "I don't want you to stop. It tells me that you're happy and you feel safe."
"Still... I don't want to keep you awake with my purring."
"Can I ask you something then? I'm not sure if it'll bring your mood down, but you said you hadn't had someone who was proud of you in a while right?" Hecate asked.
Calypso shrugged. "I told you I was a little shit when I was younger. My parents weren't exactly glad they had a conceited little brat for a daughter."
"I'm sure they still loved you."
"I know they did." Calypso answered. "But they weren't proud of my behavior. I deserved my curse and everything that came with it. I was rude and disrespectful. I used my song on my elders and took advantage of everyone I could."
"It's so hard to believe you when you say that, because you're such a different person now." Hecate answered with a smile.
Calypso chuckled dryly. "Karma has a funny way of correcting people." She answered. "I just wished most Sirens and Mermaids could get humbled the way I was."
"What do you mean?"
"In my time at the school, there's quite a few of my people who use their songs to take advantage of others." She explained. "They take wills away from other people to try and get their way, and not all of them have been punished for this yet."
"It's sad. I know I can't understand the mindset of your people because it's just not how I was raised, but even still." Hecate shrugged, gently running her fingers through Calypso's hair.
"When our culture is based on music and the power of our voices and songs, it makes it hard to resist exerting your control over those not as fortunate as you. They've been getting better from what I've been told, but I know my generation is still filled with people like who I used to be."
"Well, if they're getting better than that's all we can hope for, right?"
"Yeah. Even still. It's such a shame to see my people acting like idiots. I almost wish that when we came onto land our voices were required to be taken from us."
"You'd willingly let your voice be taken again?"
"If it would prevent my people from charming innocent people and using their powers for their own selfish gain, yes! I destroyed my life by abusing my power, and that was against my own people. Imagine the kind of damage that could be caused if one of mine did it to someone like Miss Arthur? Or any of our professors?"
