Chapter Thirty One!
real life + text messages

Leaning back against her seat, Paige tried to focus on the sound of the airplane's engine, hoping it would distract her from her thoughts.

It didn't.

It was late, and she should be tired considering the game against Marquette that took place an hour ago, but she wasn't. Not when her mind was racing and New York was waiting for her. As soon as the game was over and they were back at the hotel, she had taken a quick shower before packing her bag and ordered an Uber to the airport.

For the next three days, she would do anything to have Azalea back. Of course, she'd still respect Azalea's wishes. If Azalea wanted her to leave or if she wasn't ready to talk, then Paige wouldn't force her to. The least she could do after everything was to give and respect any decisions that Azalea made.

Even if the thought of Azalea's decisions terrified her.

Her leg bounced anxiously as she stared out the small airplane window, the city lights below shimmering like tiny stars against the darkness. Paige had always loved the view above—how the world looked so peaceful and distant. Tonight, though, it just felt heavy, like every mile closer to New York added another weight to her chest.

She fiddled with the hair tie around her wrist. It was a random hair tie that she had stolen from Azalea's vanity desk back in Connecticut, but she didn't take it off since then.

The flight went by pretty quickly and Paige was thankful that she could at least get a little bit of sleep during it. Soon, the flight attendant's voice sounded over the speaker, announcing their descent into New York. Paige's stomach twisted at the reminder that this was actually happening. Soon, she'd be on the ground and there was no turning back after it.

After a few moments of the plane descending onto the runway, they soon were given the go ahead of heading out of the plane. She grabbed her carry on bag from above her, before she was heading out into the terminal.

Paige didn't really have a plan. All she knew was that it was, one, way too late to head straight to Azalea's house, and two, she was too tired to even began to think of a plan for the next days ahead of her. So, a hotel was the best option for now.

She made her way out of the airport before quickly getting into a taxi and giving the driver the address of the hotel she'd be staying in for a few days. As the driver drove through the city, Paige leaned back against her seat, sighing heavily as the exhaustion of the game and the jet lag was starting to hit her.

She stared out the window, watching the tall buildings and endless cars that drove by, or how the snow fell on the busy streets. As she continued looking outside, she couldn't help but imagine how it would've been if everything did go right. How much better they could've spent their holidays.
