Omniscient POV
Taraji gently gripped the steering wheel, stealing occasional glances at Fantasia, who sat quietly beside her. Morning sunlight filtered through the windshield, casting soft, warm patterns across their intertwined hands resting atop the gear shift. Taraji's expression was a subtle mixture of hopefulness and anxiety, her chest rising and falling with carefully measured breaths.
"Are you nervous?" Fantasia finally broke the comfortable silence, her voice gentle, comforting.
Taraji smiled softly, exhaling deeply. "More than I thought I'd be. Individual therapy feels different—this is both of us, our vulnerabilities exposed together."
Fantasia moved her hand over Taraji's, softly caressing her knuckles. "True. But we're here together. We'll face this together."
They arrived at the therapist's building, parked, and sat briefly in the hushed quiet, gathering their thoughts. The abrupt silence after the engine stopped was charged with tension and anticipation. Taraji turned to Fantasia, her gaze brimming with apprehension yet hopeful determination.
Fantasia read Taraji's expression perfectly. "We can do this. Remember, we chose this together."
"I know," Taraji whispered, her voice cracking slightly. "I just want it to work out so badly. I'm tired of losing things that mean everything to me."
Fantasia gently cupped Taraji's face, her eyes sincere and loving. "You won't lose me. I promise."
Entering the waiting room, they sat close, shoulders brushing comfortably. Taraji's anxiety was evident, her leg bouncing rhythmically. Fantasia reached over, placing a calming hand on Taraji's thigh. The gentle touch calmed Taraji's nerves instantly, and she took Fantasia's hand in gratitude.
"This first session," Taraji murmured softly, "is going to set a tone."
Fantasia squeezed her hand reassuringly. "Then let's set one of openness, honesty, and healing."
The office door opened, revealing Dr. Anita Stewart, a therapist known for her compassionate approach. "Taraji, Fantasia," she greeted warmly, motioning them inside. Her welcoming demeanor immediately eased some of their tension.
They entered a room that felt more like a cozy living room than a clinical space. Soft sunlight illuminated the walls, plants added warmth, and comfortable seating invited openness. Fantasia led Taraji gently to a couch opposite Dr. Stewart, who greeted them with a comforting smile.
"Welcome, both of you," Dr. Stewart began softly. "I'm glad you're here. Starting couples therapy is courageous. You've both individually navigated significant losses, and now you're choosing to walk this healing path together."
Taraji drew in a deep breath, meeting Dr. Stewart's gentle gaze. "It's been hard," she began softly, her voice trembling slightly. "Losing my younger son, then my oldest just when we were about to reconnect, has made me question everything. Mostly myself—if I even deserve love."
Fantasia gently rubbed Taraji's back, silently offering support as Taraji's tears welled. Dr. Stewart leaned forward sympathetically, encouraging Taraji to continue.
"Through individual therapy, I realized I do deserve love," Taraji continued, voice steadying. "Fantasia has shown me that love can be possible again. She's given me hope, and I'm here to make sure I don't lose that hope again."
Dr. Stewart nodded gently, turning her compassionate gaze to Fantasia. "Fantasia, how does Taraji's journey resonate with you?"
Fantasia took a deep breath, her own voice trembling slightly. "Taraji's struggle mirrors mine. After losing my son, going through a difficult marriage that ended in divorce—I've experienced deep wounds, too. But I promised myself never to give up on love, to fight for it, no matter how hard it got. With Taraji, I see a chance to finally build something lasting."
