Day by day goes by, and by the time Friday rolls around again, I've barely talked to Gavin.
After the closet incident on Tuesday, we haven't really seen each other much. Sure, I've seen him at lunch and passing in the hallway, but he never really acknowledges me until we're alone. I don't know what his problem is, but it's getting on my nerves.
Devon wanted me to go to his basketball game tonight, and as much as I would rather stay home and binge while watching Awkward, the look on his face was so pleading, I cracked almost immediately.
Stacy, Tammy, Hailey, Brad, and Logan, all agreed to come with me, again. I'm very thankful that they are coming along, I don't really want to sit alone while watching my brother play and...Gavin. I just hope he won't say anything to me.
We find a seat in the student section on the bleachers, along with a ton of other students, and talk for a little while until the game starts.
"Welcome, to the varsity Basketball game!" The announcers voice booms through the speakers. "On the court first is Devon Duffy, Gavin Johnson, Richard Johnson, George Monroe, and Christopher Wagner!"
The boys run out on to the court and line up with the boys from the other team. Devon being point guard and Gavin as Center. Since Devon is taller than the rest of the boys in that particular group, and being point guard, he's assigned to do jump ball.
The team we are facing today is supposed to be really good. Out of five games so far, they haven't lost one, neither have we so this could determine who is still undefeated and who isn't.
The referee blows the whistle, loudly, might I add and number twenty-four from the other team and Devon both jump up to get the ball.
The other team gets the ball first and we rush down to the other side.
The first three quarters go by in a blur and we are down three points. Right now it is seventy-three to seventy. It's a really close game really. I just hope we can pull it together and win this quarter.
They put the best players in the last quarter which consist of Nick Jahkaki, Lucas Arbal, Devon, Gavin, and Richard.
With a minute left in the game, Devon passes the ball to Nick and Nick uses the twist turn to bypass the defender that's on him. Once he realizes he's stuck and stops dribbling the ball, he then throws the ball over to Richard who runs back around the court until he's at the low block, there's two guys on him, both taller than he is, so he passes it to Gavin. We need three points to win the game. I know Devon could easily make a three pointer. I don't know if Gavin is as good a shooter as he is at defense.
Gavin moves back the tiniest bit until he's sure that he's past the three point mark and takes his stance to shoot.
"Come on, Gavin, come on," I whisper and cross my fingers. Everything seems to go in slow motion, the ball rolling off of his fingers in an exquisite motion, swiftly flying threw the air.
"Come on," I whisper again, the whole gymnasium is silent as we wait for the ball to reach its ending point. Everyone stands up in anticipation for what's to come next.
The ball curves at the right angle, evidently falling into the basket in one swift motion. Nothing but net.
"Yes!" I shout along with every one else. I run down the bleachers and onto the court along with some of the players girlfriends, there's a different approach for me though, I'm not going to congratulate Gavin, but Richard and my brother.
I run into Richard's arms and wrap my arms around his neck, he laughs in my ear and picks me up, my feet coming off the ground.
"You did great!" I beam when he sets me down.
