Lisa Three weeks later...
Being a mother was hard, but not because of Kai. Kai was perfect. It was everything else—the sleepless nights, the constant worrying and, most of all, the guilt.
Lisa sat in the rocking chair inside Kai's nursery, watching her tiny chest rise and fall. The baby had Y/n's nose and her eyes too. Every time Lisa looked at her, she saw the woman she loved, the woman she lost and the woman she still couldn't stop loving no matter how hard she tried.
Her phone buzzed in her hand.
Y/n ❤️
Lisa's heart immediately skipped as she hurried to answer. "Hey."
"Hey," Y/n greeted softly. "Did I wake her?"
Lisa smiled despite herself, glancing toward the crib. "No, she finally fell asleep twenty minutes ago."
"Damn. I missed my favorite girl."
"You talking about me or Kai?"
"The baby."
"Wow."
"I'll call you back then."
Lisa laughed for the first time all day. There she was—the woman who could make her smile no matter how determined she was to remain upset with her.
"You good?" Y/n asked after a moment.
Somehow, she always knew.
"No," Lisa admitted.
The silence that followed wasn't awkward. It never was with Y/n. Even after everything that happened between them, silence remained one of the few things they still understood.
"You wanna talk about it?" Y/n asked.
Lisa looked down at Kai. "I don't know."
"Try."
She swallowed, already feeling the tears building behind her eyes. "Today would've been our wedding day."
