as soon as i entered the house, i was met by the sound of guitar. i smiled as i immediately recognized the song. as i walked into the living room, i could hear alex singing very softly. when i looked to the couch, my heart melted.
alex was sitting on the couch, hunched over their acoustic guitar. our baby was laying perfectly in the curve of the guitar, and there was a blanket between her and the guitar. her arm was draped down, so that her fingers were slightly muting the top string, but alex didn't seem to mind. their head was laying on dylan's back to support her and keep her from moving.
"blackbird singing in the dead of night. take these sunken eyes and learn to see. all your life, you were only waiting for this moment to be free," alex sang, their voice low and comforting.
they finally looked up, though they kept their head on dylan's back. they gave a shy smile. "well, hi, darling."
"hi, baby," i giggled. "what led you to putting our baby on the guitar?" i asked teasingly.
"well, you know she pretty much only calms down when one of us sings or plays guitar," they started. "and i just wanted her close to me while i sang and played for her, so this is what i came up with.
"well, for one, it's absolutely adorable. i'm taking a picture, so smile," i teased once more as i pulled my phone out. alex gave a closed-eye, genuine smile that made me smile as well as i took the picture. once i did, i put my phone back in my pocket. "second, it definitely worked in calming her down; she's passed out."
alex finally lifted their head, and they peered down at dylan. their entire face softened as they looked at her and saw that she was asleep. they leaned forward to kiss her head. "i'm glad; as soon as you left, she started bawling; for her to be so tiny, she can scream," they shook their head.
"trust me, i know," i sighed, thinking to the already countless times she's woke me up in the middle of the night, screaming crying, for me to breastfeed her. "i don't even want to think about how she's going to be when she's older and tries to throw a temper tantrum."
alex frowned. "i didn't even think about that. i just hope she turns out to be a good kid."
"well, according to my parents, if she's anything like i was when i was a toddler, then we're in for it," i sighed.
alex dipped their head with a sigh of their own. they then looked back up at me. "can you get her? i didn't really think about how i would get her off of the guitar without dropping her or the guitar," they admitted guiltily.
i let out a laugh before i bent down to pick dylan up. once i had her cradled in my arms, i pressed a kiss to her forehead. alex set their guitar to the side then stood up. they placed a hand on my lower back and pulled me as close as possible without smushing dylan. they used their other hand to cup my face and guide my lips to theirs.
"i missed you," they murmured as they pulled the slightest bit away.
"i wasn't even gone an hour," i teased before they kissed me again. i only had to go to the store to grab a few ingredients for later.
"i know. i still missed you. i missed you tons," they smiled against my lips. i couldn't help but to melt in their hold.
"i love you," i nearly whispered. "more than you could ever know."
"that's funny, cause i love you more than you could ever know," they now grinned. they then stepped back and bent down slightly to kiss dylan's forehead. "and i love you more than you could ever know."
