I went back to my former workplace to claim my last paycheck—probably my this would be my final visit there.
As I walked through the familiar hallways—the lobby, the canteen, the CR, the familiar offices, and every classroom and laboratory we used to went for lessons and lectures—memories came rushing back. Each corner seemed to whisper stories of the past, and for a moment, it felt like time folded in on itself.
But what touched me most was hearing the voices of my former students echoing from the stairs below. They called out my name again and again, their voices filled with warmth: “Sir! Kamusta na ka, sir? Mo balik ka, sir? Balik na, sir!”
My heart melted. All I could do was smile and ask them back, “Kamusta na sad mo?”
It was such a simple question—How are you?—but it carried so much weight. I know they’re drowning in requirements, staying up late for exams, and pushing themselves every single day. Yet despite the stress, they still smiled at me. And so, I smiled back, hoping it was enough to ease their hearts, even just for a moment. We took a few pictures together—small snapshots that I’ll treasure forever.
I don’t know what the future holds, but I believe it’s promising, and that gives me comfort.
On my way out, I bumped into Ate, our janitor. I remembered how she was always the first person I’d see in the mornings, wiping the floor and greeting me with a cheerful, “Good morning, sir.” This time, when she saw me again, her face lit up and she said, “Uy, hi sir!” I couldn’t help but tear up. After all this time, she still remembered me.
Before leaving, I also visited our former dean. I thanked her sincerely—for the opportunity she gave me, for her kindness, and for believing in me.
To my former students: never forget that you can do anything with the power of education. Keep going. Keep believing.
And as for me, I’ll carry these moments with me until life and fate bring us together again, in some place, at some time.
