"Why didn't you look for us?" I asked, I had to know. For almost nineteen years he was no where. He was Fae, he was powerful so why didn't he find me? Find us before Chris died. He took a deep breath before speaking.
"At first I tried, I wouldn't sleep or eat. I looked everywhere. I had figured out that Shelby had a very powerful witch working for her. They used magic to hide the both of you. With every passing day my heart broke piece by piece." Another gulp his drink as it seemed hard for him to talk about this.
"You gave up?" I asked, I did not want to believe it but that was what it was looking like. His mate had died and he lost his children.
"Not for years, I went to anyone who would help me. But whoever they had working for them was not only powerful but dangerous. The spell was too powerful for any average witch, they either couldn't overpower the spell or they were too scared to." I looked down at my glass, I couldn't process any of this properly. I was angry, but my heart broke for him. I wanted to lash out at him for abandoning us but did he really abandon us or was he just lost and unable to do anything about his situation.
"What about the Fae?" I asked, the Fae were powerful, they would have helped out their own right? He shook his head as he downed what was left in his second round of alcohol.
"They refused to help. After I had made my decision to be with Brea, they turned their backs on me. Saying it was not natural be with someone who was not of my own. I tried, I was so desperate to find you both that I went to them. I begged them to help me but they refused." He had turned his back on his own people to be with Brea. He had chosen love over family, my heart hurt for him. I just couldn't be mad at him, not only did he loose everything but he tried, he tried everything in his power to find us, even put aside his pride and went to beg to his own people.
"After I had exhausted every possible door, I was lost. I never got to know my own son or get to watch you grow up. It messed with me, I was all alone and there was nothing I could do. It hurt me to wake up each day alone. As the years passed, I picked up this bad habit," He raised his now empty glass, he meant drinking. The bartender handed him a new glass as he took another swig. "It made things only slightly better, made my head all muddled and it would make me forget all the bad." I did not know how to respond, it hurt to hear this. I balled my fist as I thought about Shelby and Max, I wanted to rip their heads off. They were absolute monsters, they had ruined more than I could have ever imagine.
"One day I had heard about a dangerous rouge couple going around terrorizing packs and other species. Instantly I knew it was them, I thought if I found them then I'd find the both of you. I followed them for months but I never saw any kids with them. I was losing hope, if you guys weren't with them then I'd be back to square one." I racked my brain trying to think when that was, but they had always left us alone for months on end at least a few times a year. They hated being around us, they had us locked inside the house most of the time. We always found a way to sneak out but since we were kids we never actually left. Too scared to run away, we had no where else to go, we felt trapped.
"They had us locked inside the house most of the time. We barely saw them, it was just the two of us." I told him, I shifted in my seat looking forward instead of at him. The whole conversation was just depressing and my mood was getting worse than it already was by the second. I played with my hands as I relived moments in the past with Chris. All the times we were huddled together in our room, afraid of the dark. Or when we were hungry and no one came by to give us food for weeks. We had to be resourceful when we realized that no one was coming to care for us. We were so young, barely learning how to take care of ourselves. Once we learned how to walk and talk that was when they started leaving us alone for long periods of time.
