I looked out at the view in front of me, sand was all I could see for miles it was never ending. Ruins of old buildings scattered about everywhere, piles of metal and other materials lay in random piles. No sign of life anywhere from my current view. I knew Rhorn was barren and unlivable, but seeing it in person couldn't compare to hearing about it. To think that rouges actually live out here was hard to believe, how'd they get their food and water? My feet stood on the last bit of grass and life before stepping onto the wasteland before me. We were about to head out into the dessert once the rest of the guys finished changing back into clothes after shifting into their human forms. My wolf was quiet after what happened earlier she stayed in her own bubble in my head. She felt the same way about the voices as I did, she doesn't like them either and I think she blames herself for not being strong enough to hold them in.
"You ready?" I nod in response, adjusting the pack on my shoulders, getting ready for the walk ahead of us. We won't be able to shift into our wolf forms as we will be easily spotted by what ever awaits us out there. Staying in our human form was our safest bet, at least until we are about five miles to the cliff.
"How many days will it take to cross?" Clara asks coming up beside Jax. Clara hasn't spoken to me and has kept her distance since she saw me earlier. I don't blame her, she was scared of me. If I was in her position I would be scared of me too. I've been keeping my distance from everyone, even Jax. I had no idea when the voices would come back and I wasn't taking any chances, especially with Jax. If they came back for blood and they had Jax in their sights I don't know what would happen, I had to take every possible precaution.
"Four, maybe five days depending on how fast we get across. The goal is to avoid everything and avoid anymore fighting." I could feel Jax's eyes on me as he says the last part. I couldn't agree more with that. Minimal fighting was ideal, the less danger the less chance that they would come back.
"We ready to head out?" A chorus of yes's has me making the first step, walking on the sand was harder than walking on solid dirt. My feet sank with every step, making our momentum just a bit slower than we would like. I sigh knowing this was going to delay us, I was grateful that I had combat boots on so it would be harder for the sand to get in my shoes. Being in wolf form would have been so much easier.
After four hours of walking, I kept the front while the rest stayed a few feet behind. Things were quiet besides the chatter of the group. I kept my ears open making sure to not miss a beat, one thing with sand was that it was quiet walking on so there was no way of hearing for anyone coming towards us. So when Jax had speed up to catch up with me I could not hear it, making me jump when I saw him appear on my side.
"I'm sorry I did not mean to scare you."
"It's okay." I looked around making sure theres wasn't anything lurking. There was about another hour of sun so we would have to stop soon and make camp.
"About earlier..." I knew this was coming, and I had already decided that I was not going to talk about it. I don't know how much longer I could keep the voices a secret but it was going to stay like that for as long as possible.
"What about earlier?" He let out a humorless laugh.
"You know what I'm talking about Oakley." I gave him a sideway glance.
"There's nothing to talk about."
"That's bullshit and you know it." His annoyance getting more obvious by the second. My frustration was building every second he tried to push me to talk.
"Oaks, you didn't see the way you looked back there, hell even all cleaned up you still look, look..." It was like he couldn't find the words to say.
"Look?"
