"Jen-" Steve pinched the bridge of his nose, not absorbing anything she said from her frantic rambling, "Babe, you need to slow down. What is going on?"
She grabbed his shoulders, "The demos are after Max!" She screamed in his face, "They're trying to kill her!"
"Just take a deep breath-"
"Don't," She swatted his hands away, "I need to see where they are now," She closed her eyes again, except this time, she couldn't find the demogorgons anywhere, "Either I'm getting weaker or they're dead. Let's hope it's the second option."
"What about my sister?" Nancy anxiously gnawed at her lip, "Where's Holly?"
"She's trapped in Vecna's head just like I was and just like Max," She explained, "Though if Max gets out, so will she. They're working together. Once I get back to the Rightside Up, I'll help get her out. So, now that I've calmed down slightly, what did I miss here?"
Dustin gave her a bare bones sum up about how they explained the exotic matter to Nancy and Jonathan and what the Upside Down really was. He also shared that Jon and Nance ended up stuck because they melted through the floor.
"I know I've said that I really wanna get out of here," Jenna sighed, "But can we please get a good look at the exotic matter?"
"Someone is thinking on my wavelength!" Dustin high-fived her.
"Nerds," Steve shook his head.
"Shut the fuck up!" Jenna smacked his arm, "Just because we're engaged now doesn't mean you get rights to bully me."
Jon and Nance looked between the two with wide eyes, "Engaged!?"
"You didn't tell them?" Jenna scoffed at Steve.
"What? It's not that important right now!" He held his hands up in surrender, "Plus Dustin wouldn't really let me talk."
Jenna squinted at Jon, "What about-"
"No," He shook his head, "She accepted my unproposal, actually."
She pouted, "Sorry... shouldn't have brought up our stuff."
Nancy rolled her eyes and hugged Jenna, "Screw Jon and I. I'm so happy for you! Let me see," She examined Jenna's hand, "Oooh, Steve. I see you didn't cheap out."
"You don't wanna know how much I spent on that," He sent her a tight lipped smile.
"You don't wanna know how much I spent on yours either," Jenna glanced at his hand, "Even with Murray's 'discount', it was up there."
"Wait," Jon coughed, "You both proposed?"
"Yeah," Jenna shrugged, "I hate societal standards and didn't think he'd have the guts or the money to do it first."
"I'm so happy that the parents are happy," Dustin draped an arm over Jenna's shoulder, "But can we please talk about this when we're out of here and after we've looked at the exotic matter?"
"Right," Jenna wrapped an arm around his middle, "Let's go do that. Here," She looked up through the hole in the roof, "Someone find a rope. That has to be safer than taking the stairs," While Jon went out into the hall to find something, Jenna shot herself up through it. He finally came back with a rope in hand, "Thank you, kind sir," She caught the end he threw up and tied it to a heating unit, "Come on up."
One by one, the rest of the group made their way to the roof.
"Whoa," Dustin tilted his head, examining what he was seeing, "It's like it isn't even there."
"Just fuzzy invisible stuff," Steve nodded in agreement.
Jenna took a step towards it, reaching her hand out, "I wanna touch it."
"No!" All four yelled at her.
"We have no clue what that would do to you," Dustin warned.
Her hand reached out further to it, like it was beckoning her, "Still wanna touch it."
"Stop!" Steve tried to pull her back.
"Jenna!" Dustin squealed.
Against her better judgement, she touched it and disappeared.
"Fuck!" Steve buried his hands in his hair.
Jenna reappeared in the same place except it wasn't quite the same. She looked around and there weren't as many vines. It was quieter with less demos running wild. All she could hear was the chirping of a few bats circling overhead.
Where the fuck am I? Or... when am I?
She turned behind her to head down the hole in the floor, but it was gone. Instead, she went to the stairs and headed down. She didn't know where she wanted to go, so she made her way down to the basement. Once down there, she started to feel major deja vu. She hadn't been inside the lab and actually gotten a good look in years. Sure she'd just been down there with Steve, but she was too focused on him to notice much of her surroundings. Upon opening a door, she found herself inside the rainbow room. In the back, a door sat open with a light coming from inside.
"Hello?" A man called out when he heard her bump into a table, "Who's there?"
"Who are you?" She quietly replied back. Her eyes widened when she saw the man walk out, "Brenner?"
