"Can we please just leave him here?" Lucas winned as he helped Dustin lift Steve into Billy's car.
"No," Jenna scoffed, "We can't just leave him here. Now, Lucas and Max, you two will sit in the front seat and give me directions. Dustin and Mike, you guys will sit in the back with Steve and watch over him for when he wakes back up. Does that sound like a plan?"
Jenna had snatched her mixtape from her boom box so she could listen to some tunes to distract her while she drove. Lucas sat half on the passenger's seat with a map open for Max, who was reading directions to Jenna. The cassette clicked to the song Flirtin' with Disaster by Molly Hatchet.
[I'm travelin' down the road and I'm flirtin' with disaster. I got the pedal to the medal to the floor and my life is runnin' faster]
"What the fuck is this song?" Dustin asked, completely scared to death from the back seat.
"Good music," Jenna smirked.
"No, it's not. You suck at driving and I'm scared that this is going to predict the future. Change it. Now."
"No. You can't tell me what to do."
"But I'm scared!"
"Just shut up- oh, shit!"
Jenna abruptly swerved to miss a rabbit in the middle of the road, throwing everyone around in the car, causing Max's foot to hit the cassette player on accident. The cassette started to fast forward quickly. Jenna hit play so her cassette wouldn't get fucked up, but she fucked up with where she decided to hit play.
(Start listening to Free Bird at 4:43 for your reading pleasure. I promise it makes reading 10x funnier.)
"This isn't much better! I think the other song was right! Shit!" Dustin squealed while holding on for dear life in the back.
[Lord, I can't change. Won't you fly high, free bird, yeah. (Cue long ass guitar solo)]
Time to put the pedal to the medal.
Jenna hit the gas and started to fly down the street.
"Please don't let us die. Please don't let us die," Dustin started to whisper to himself, almost like he was praying for the first time in his entire life.
"We won't die," Jenna looked back at him.
"DEER!" Max yelled, causing Jenna to whip her head back around to the road.
"FUCK!"
Jenna swerved into someone's yard to avoid the deer and took out the family's mailbox. She got back on the road, but was not driving very straight.
"Make a left here," Max told her, completely panicking, "Please don't kill us."
"I won't fucking kill you, shut up!"
"Jenna," Mike warned, "You may want to look behind us. It's not looking too good."
Jenna looked in her side mirror to see police lights.
You have got to be kidding me.
"Um... just hold on."
"What are you going to do?" Lucas asked, wide-eyed, while grabbing the 'oh shit' handle next to him.
Jenna swerved off the road—again—and onto one of the trails in the woods. Steve and her had driven on it before, what was the difference going 40 mph faster? She almost hit 3 trees, a couple rabbits, a skunk, and a family of squirrels, but with her experience at being a reckless driver, she swerved around them just fine. Though, it was at the expense of all of the children being crushed and thrown all over the place.
"We're all going to fucking die!" Dustin screamed at the top of his lungs.
"LANGUAGE!" Jenna screamed back at him.
She finally swerved back on the road, having lost the police car in her trek through the woods.
Calahan's gonna be on my ass after this thing's over.
In the back she started to hear Steve stirring awake. He looked up at Dustin and mumbled, "Jenna?"
He reached up to try and touch his horribly beaten face when Dustin pulled his hand away, telling him, "No, don't touch it. Hey, buddy..." He started shushing the muttering Steve, "It's okay. You put up a good fight. He kicked your ass, but you put up a fight. You're okay."
Steve groaned in pain then lifted his head to look up at the driver's seat.
"Where's Jenna?"
"I'm right here," She took one hand off the wheel to go and hold his, but was met with a bunch of 'no's' from the kids, who were all scared shitless. She begrudgingly put her hand back on the wheel
"Jenna," Lucas tried to get her back on track, "Focus on the road. You're gonna keep straight for half a mile, then make a left on Mount Sinai."
"What's going on?" Steve grumbled.
Jenna saw a stray cat trying to cross the road and swerved very hard, causing Steve to groan in even more pain. "Whoa stop the car! Who's driving? Wait... Jenna! Who the hell let her drive!?"
"Jenna," Max scrunched up her face, "I can't believe I'm saying this, but go faster. We're almost there."
"WHAT!?" Dustin yelled.
"We need to get there faster, go!"
