I was woken from my sleep by movements. It was the middle of the night, and was nowhere near time to wake up, so I struggled to open my eyes. But when I did, I saw Nelly laying there, seemingly distressed. She had wriggled out of my arms, but she was still fast asleep. Though her face told me that whatever dream she was having wasn't a good one. Every so often she would shift her head, as if she wasn't comfortable.

I yawned and gently shook her by the shoulder. "Nelly... Nelly, wake up..."

"Mmf..." She moaned, and her eyebrows twitched.

"Come on... Nelly. Nelly, wake up..." I brushed the hair back from her face.

"Ngh... Hm...?" Nelly slowly opened her eyes. She rubbed them with the back of her hands and sat upright. With another yawn, I sat up beside her.

"Are you all right...?" I asked sleepily. "It looked like you were having a bad dream."

"Uh... Yeah, I'm ok..." She held her head in her hands. "Thanks for waking me."

"That's ok." I blinked heavily. "Can you get back to sleep?"

"I don't know... My tummy hurts..." She looked down.

"I'll get some medicine." I went to get out of bed.

"No... No, I'll just lay down." Nelly yawned. She slowly lowered her head back down onto the pillow before putting her hands over her stomach.

"Here..." I lifted the covers. It was hard to stay awake. Slowly and gently, I lifted her top a little bit so I could rub her stomach. Her skin was soft to the touch, and I lay back down beside her. "Does it help?"

"...Yes... Thank you..." Nelly closed her eyes.

"All right. Good night, Nelly." I closed my eyes and continued to gently massage her stomach.

"Good night..." She whispered.

I went back to sleep a few minutes later.

Next time I woke up, it was already midday. I could tell by the amount of light coming into the room that the Sun had been out there for a while. Nelly was still asleep beside me, thankfully a lot more calm this time. My hand was still on her stomach. I lowered her top back down to her waist and sat up. With half the day gone already, I didn't know what I wanted to do. I ran the back of my hand under my chin and felt the hairs. That was how I would start. Then I looked at Nelly. I would go and shave, and then bring her some tablets. I nodded to myself and quietly slipped out of bed, making sure she was covered up and warm.

The cupboard and the drawers were ahead of me, and I thought about taking some clothes out to change into. But I decided against it in the end. We were halfway through the day already. Might as well make it a pyjama day. I carefully opened and closed the bedroom door before walking across the hallway into the bathroom. Looking into the mirror above the sink, I saw that my hair was a mess and my eyes told me that I didn't get enough sleep, despite being in bed for most of the day. Nevertheless, I washed my face and started to shave.

After that, I walked back into the bedroom with the medicine and a glass of water. Nelly was still asleep, so I set them down on the bedside table and sat on the bed again. I realised that she had done the same for me once. When I had been feeling ill, she had brought me medicine and stayed with me in bed. Her lips were slightly parted, and her arms were by her side. She looked so peaceful, laying there. I smiled. She really was beautiful. And I didn't tell her often enough.

Just then, she rolled onto her side, tucking an arm under her head. She was facing me now. I wondered what she was dreaming about. I brought my legs up onto the bed, lay down beside her and pulled the covers up to my neck. Her breathing was slow and calm, and I felt it against my cheek. It was the simple things like that that really made me happy. I found her hand and held it gently, rubbing my thumb along the back. "Sweet dreams..." I whispered, and kissed her forehead. I don't know why, but I found myself wanting to cry. I was just that happy. "I love you."
