Chapter 16 - Tragic Decision

“Ok, Toby, sit down.” Nelly said as she led me into the bedroom.

“All right...” I sighed, turning to sit on the bed. She sat down beside me and me in the eyes.

“You're still torn up about all of this, aren't you?”

“...Yes...” I admitted.

“All right... Well, let me help you.”

“But Nelly, it hurts you when we talk about this...”

“I don't care. This is hurting you a lot more than it hurts me...” Nelly argued. “So... How are you feeling?”

“I... I feel like I'm stuck in the middle of a problem that has no solution.” I looked down at the bed covers. “I love you, and I haven't stopped for a moment, and yet... On the other hand, I have these feelings for her, at the same time...”

“Do you know what those feelings are yet? How exactly do you feel about Lydia?” She shuffled up closer.

“I... I think I've known for a while now... But I'm too scared to say it...”

“It's ok, Toby...” Nelly took my hand. “I can handle it. And you know it won't get better until you accept what you feel. So... Tell me...”

She closed her eyes and waited.

“I... I...” I watched her face as she seemed to brace herself. My stomach flipped and my heart ached, but it had to be done. “...I... Love her...”

Nelly inhaled deeply and paused before opening her eyes. “I know.” She breathed.

“But, Nelly...” I put my hand on hers.

“I'm fine... I'm ok...” She sighed. “I... I-I...”

I gave her a minute, and she stayed completely still, staring at the floor with clouded eyes and a blank expression.

“I never wanted this...” I swallowed, my eyes watering. “I never meant for this to happen...”

“It's not your fault...” Nelly wiped her eyes. “Love is a powerful thing... Sometimes you can't help who you fall in love with...”

“B-but I don't want to hurt you...” I wailed.

“Forget about me. It's about what's right for you.” She squeezed my hand.

“Nelly...”

“Spend some time with her... It's the only way to know if you really feel that way...”
