Chapter 1 - New Friend

I sat upright in the dead of night, breathing heavily. A cold sweat was seeping down my neck and my hands were shaking. I clutched the covers tightly, reassuring myself that I was awake. “What in the world...?” I thought, slowly taking in air. As far as I knew, I hadn't been having a bad dream, so I had no idea why I had woken up this way. In the dark, I could just about make out Nelly's sleeping form, down beside me. She didn't move from her spot, and I sighed in relief. With a shake of the head, I slowly lifted the covers off myself and swung my legs over the bed. Quietly, I stood and walked over to the window, drawing a curtain back. Our hill was in the distance, under the sky full of stars and the shining moon. The faint light trickled onto my shoulders and I watched the silent world outside. “That really was strange... But maybe I've already forgotten a nightmare?”

“Mm...”

I looked behind to see Nelly sat up, rubbing her eyes. “Ahh... Toby...?” She yawned. “What's up?”

“Oh, nothing.” I answered, yawning myself. “I think I had a bad dream, that's all.”

“Are you all right?”

“Yeah, I'm ok.” I smiled, closing the curtain. The room fell back to almost complete darkness.

“Ok... Are you coming back...?” She blinked several times, stretching her arms.

“Mhm.”

I climbed back into bed and wrapped my arms around her again. She yawned and nuzzled into my shoulder.

“Sorry for waking you.” I apologised.

“It's ok...” Nelly said sleepily.

“Good night.” I kissed her forehead and she fell asleep almost instantly.

But it wasn't so easy for me. Something didn't feel right, but I didn't know what. Whatever it was, I didn't like it.

The next morning, I slept in for a little while to make up for what I lost the night before. When I did eventually wake up, Nelly was standing by the drawers, in her day clothes of white shirt, purple skirt and purple bow.

“Good morning.” She smiled.

“Good morning.” I stretched, smiling back.

“Dad's gone into town, and I'm going with Mum to the shops in a minute.” She explained. “I would've asked you to come, but I didn't want to wake you.”

“That's all right, I could still get changed and come too, if you want.” I stood up.
