After regrouping, we all took to the skies to leave Goldenrod City. The journey back to Kanto was short, but it seemed incredibly long to me. Dark clouds had drifted into the sky, and low rumbles could be heard amongst the wind. As the Pokemon flew onwards, Snowflake and I were slowly bringing up the rear. I wasn't so much sitting up on her back as slumping against her. “Take me to the Pokemon Centre when we get to Fuchsia City, please...” I told my Pokemon. She nodded, and made a sad little noise in response. When we made it above the city, we separated from the group.

“This is for the best...” I whispered to myself, holding a PokeBall in my hand. I was stood in Grovyle's room, beside the PC in the corner. He was still fast asleep, the Everstone on the bedside table. The PokeBall I was holding was his, and I placed it back in my pocket with Snowflake's. My other three were out on the desk in front of me. Empoleon, Cyndi and Larvitar. “I'm sorry, everyone...” I spoke to the spheres. “But I can't... I can't look after you any longer... You'll be in danger with me...”

The PC was on and I was wired straight to my storage deposit. The small groove next to the keyboard was lit up in a blue light, ready to transfer my PokeBalls to safety. “Goodbye, Empoleon, thank you...”

I placed her PokeBall into the hold, and within seconds, it vanished, beamed away in an instant. With a deep breath, I picked up the next one. “Cyndi... I'll miss you...”

I closed my eyes as the machine took her from me.

“Larvitar...” I picked up the last one. “I'm sorry... I know you want to fight, but I... I can't let you get hurt...”

With a sinking feeling, I let go of his PokeBall, and the PC transferred him into storage as well. “If all goes well... I'll be back for you all...” I sniffed, turning back to face Grovyle. I had kept Snowflake because I needed her for travel, yet, a part of me knew that she remained because I simply could not leave her behind.

“Grovyle...” I sat down on the chair beside his bed. “When you get better... I think it would be best to put you in storage too... I can't be the cause of any more pain...”

“Ngh...”

My Pokemon's arm twitched, and he gripped the bed covers.

“Grovyle?”

He fell silent again. “I know it's not what you want... It isn't what I want either...” I felt my eyes water. “But... Sometimes we can't have what we want...”

I stood up and rubbed my eyes. “But it's even worse when we can't have what we need...”

I left the Pokemon Centre three Pokemon lighter, now carrying only one. The skies were dark and it threatened to rain at any moment. I could see the house off in the distance, and with a deep breath, I began the lonely walk back home.
