WINTER BREAK was here and I groaned at the thought of leaving city life and going to visit my father, who lived in a small town Boise, California. Why? Because he lives smacked down in the middle of no where. And I'm not kidding when I say that. Seriously, the nearest town is four hours away. Come to think of it, everything was four hours away from Boise.
And thanks to my mom, who decided to go to Hawaii with her new boyfriend Brent, I was spending my winter there.
"I don't see why I can't go with you," I groaned, walking into my mothers room.
My mother, Matilda Meason, is forty-two years old, divorced, and single once again.
Born a brunette though she preferred her hair to be bleached blonde and long. Her eyes are green just like mine.
"We've already talked about this Mia," my mother sighed, as she continued to pack for her trip.
"Yes, but refresh my memory," I said, laying down on her bed and staring at the ceiling.
"Brent needs a vacation to relax from his job. Some alone time with me. Having you there isn't actually ideal." My mom explained,
"But you won't even notice I'm there," I pleaded. "I'll stay out of your guys way until it's time to leave."
"But we'll always worry about you. We want to be worry free," she further explained.
"But mom," I started.
"No, buts about it," she stopped me.
I groaned and rolled my eyes. Crossing my arms I sat up on the bed.
"So you're gonna hand me off to my father who I haven't see or spoken to since I was five?" I questioned.
"Yes, it'll give you two time to catch up," she was grasping at straws. "It'll be a nice reunion."
"A reunion of backwoods living and eating off the land," I muttered under my breath.
"Don't speak about your father that way," she warned. "His way of living isn't wrong."
"But it was wrong for you," I pointed out. "Yet here you are throwing me to that kind of living that I know nothing about."
"Stop whining and pack your stuff," she ordered. I had hit a nerve and I was pleased.
"Yeah yeah," I got up to leave.
"I'm serious Mia, we leave bright and early tomorrow," she informed me.
"I know," I sighed, and left her room to go to mine.
My bedroom was two doors down from hers, thankfully. The thought of hearing her and Brent or any other man...that gave me the chills.
My room was fairly big, it wasn't exactly small either. I slept on a queen sized bed, not because I wanted too, but because I had a tendency to fall out of bed at night. This was my mothers way of making sure I had enough room to move around during my sleep. Which, safe to say, was pretty smart of her.
My walls were painted a violet color and decorated with posters of my favorite band at the moment: 5 seconds of summer. I had an unhealthy crush on one of the boys--that I kept a secret--because well, I was a sophomore in high school and I didn't want to be labeled as a crazy fan girl.
But my god, I love this boy, I thought as I kissed the palm of my hand and placed it on his face on the poster. If only he knew I existed...I would feel like...
"Mia!" My mother yelled from down the hall.
"What?" I hollered back, my daydream came to a stop.
"You better be packing," she warned.
"I am!" I yelled back in frustration.
Daydreaming about band boys had to wait.
My luggage was still on my bed, the place I had left it earlier this morning, and still very empty. I couldn't decide what I wanted to pack and take with me. I didn't know what I would need. It wasn't like I could take my entire wardrobe there.
After two grueling hours, I finished packing and dragged my luggage and backpack with me to the living room.
"All done?" My mother asked seeing me walk by.
"Yup. I packed what I could and whatever I couldn't; I'm sure dad won't mind shelling out money for it."
"Sounds good," she said absentmindedly, returning to one of her romantic books with a bare chested man on the cover.
"Does dad even know I'm coming?" I made myself ask. I had been wondering all day if he knew I was being abandoned there.
"Of course. Do you really think I would drop you off without letting him know first?" She questioned.
I shrugged.
"Well, I did tell him and he agreed to have you there for the weeks that I'm gone. "
"What will I even do there?" I wondered out loud.
"Enjoy the nature. Make new friends. Be a kid," she replied closing her book. "You'll have fun."
"I guess," I mumbled.
"Just promise me one thing," she said, her tone turned serious. "Listen to your father and obey his rules, ok?"
"His rules?" I looked at her with beady eyes.
"The place he lives," she began unsure of how to explain to me. "Is very strict and there are rules. Just make sure you follow them so you father doesn't get in trouble, ok?" She seemed worried.
"Okay," I said unsure of what to make of what she was saying.
"Good," she stood up. "I guess it's bed time."
"It's not even ten yet," I looked at her weird.
"When you're older you'll understand how important sleep is for your body," she told me, kissing me on the forehead before leaving down the hallway to her room.
"Alone at last," I said switching on the TV and watching One Tree Hill on Netflix. And there I would stay and sleep until I woke up and crawled into bed. Winter break had started.
