CHAPTER 43
I WOKE UP in pain. It coursed through my entire body. Everything hurt. My back was bruised, my neck was a shade of purple now, and my stab wound was still the same.
Theodore had kept his promise to me. Malcolm did not bother me all night. I was left by myself, to think, and decided what I wanted to do about my future. A decision that would restore or break my life.
Doc did come by to patch me up (a little after Theodore left) so I had a good supply of painkillers again. He gave me the good stuff this time, with caution that I could get addicted. I didn't worry though because I knew I wouldn't take them unless my pain was unbearable.
I had decided to hide the tablet that Theodore had given me in case anyone came while I was asleep, try to take it back. I fetched it from my hiding spot and pushed the button to switch it on. After a few minutes it turned on and there was Brian, still sleeping.
He looked okay and I was happy knowing that he was alive. His hair was unruly and unbrushed, yet he still managed to look good. He had no noticeable bruising on his face because he had healed up pretty fast. Stupid werewolf and their self healing powers. I wondered how much longer he had to stay where ever he was, while he healed. I didn't know the extent of his injuries that I had caused through Malcolm.
I had hurt him and he continued to love me, despite that I had. I wondered if he still did. Or had his mind changed? If he didn't love me anymore it would certainly make my decision that much easier.
I had to find out where they were keeping him.
I had to speak with him.
Theodore had kept his promise to me. Malcolm did not bother me all night. I was left by myself, to think, and decided what I wanted to do about my future.
Half of me wanted a do over. A reset. The other half, wanted Malcolm overthrown and to see Brian again before I had to decide. He was alive and that kind of changed things. I wanted the best of both worlds but I knew that wasn't possible. Decisions had to be made soon and I hoped I would make the right one.
I was just coming out from the shower when someone knocked on my door. I quickly ran to get dressed.
"Just a minute!" I yelled, pulling on my shirt and shorts. I threw on what I could find and opened the door. It was Gerrard.
"Breakfast." He pushed the food tray at me and was on his way when I called him back.
"Wait!"
"What?" He paused, turning around to face me.
"Isn't today the big day?" I wondered, unsure.
"Was." He replied. He was being one worded with me, which wasn't exactly rare but it kind of was at the same time.
"What happened?" I probed.
"Theodore happened." He answered. "Mate ceremony is cancelled. Congrats."
"What? Really?" I was both relieved and shocked. "And what about Malcolm?"
"Theodore is now Alpha of Boise." He answered, like it answered my question (which it did) and left before I had any more time to bombard him with questions.
I felt the weight lift off my shoulders and I felt like things were finally getting better. Brian was alive and I was free from Malcolm's clutches.
I placed the tray down on the table in front of me and began to eat. The eggs tasted extra delicious today. The bacon was the right amount of crispy. The toast was crunchy and buttery too. I almost felt like I was having my last meal before judgment day came.
