THE NEXT day when I woke up I was still in denial. I just couldn't believe what my dad had told me last night or rather early this morning, when I caught him red handed. He was a werewolf. That's what he told me. No explanation or anything, just that he was one. I didn't even know if I believed him.
I walked into the kitchen still in my sleeping clothes and gave a big hearty yawn.
"Good morning," My dad greeted me without looking up from his newspaper.
"Morning," I returned the gesture and then asked. "What's for breakfast?"
"Pancakes, hashbrowns, sausages, and eggs." He answered.
I made myself a plate and grabbed some orange juice that was in a pitcher on the counter and took my seat across from him.
He wasn't going to address the big elephant in the room so i guessed it was up to me.
"Are you going to tell me more or forget about what happened last night?" I questioned while eating my picking up my fork.
"What's there to talk about?" he said immediately, almost as if he was just waiting for me to ask.
"Uh, A lot. You can start with how you learned you were one to begin with," I told him.
He shook his head no.
"Come on, dad, tell me," I begged.
"I've already told you too much," he replied, sipping on his coffee. "If i say anymore, your mother will definitely kill me."
"She won't kill you," I knew that much. My mother was a lover not a fighter.
"You don't know your mother like i do," he smirked.
"Maybe you're right," I reasoned. "But..."
"No, I know i am," he said adamantly.
"Still...mom had no right to keep this secret from me." I told him. "She should have told me when i was old enough to know and understand."
"Well it's not like she can sit you down and say, 'oh honey how was school today? Oh and by the way, your dads a freak. And by that I mean a werewolf, who hunts humans and howls at the moon.' Now, if mom said that to you, how do you think you would have responded?" He countered.
"I would...have been thrilled..." I said unconvincingly.
"No, you would have told your teachers and they probably would have thought your mom was unfit to raise you," he predicted.
"Or maybe, I would have thought it was the greatest thing in the world and came back to live with you," I admitted.
"You think being a werewolf is the greatest thing in the world?" He asked me, I could see a twinkle of humor in his green eyes.
"I do," I smiled. I couldn't lie. I was a big fan of the supernatural world and knowing it existed...I was ecstatic!
My dad smiled and it was real. It wasn't the fake smile that he gave my mom. It was genuine and real and it had been for me.
"Well I'm glad to know that you accept me but your mother thought it best you didn't know, so I can say nothing more," he admitted.
"...she should have told me," I repeated again.
"You were better off not knowing," he repeated his words to me again, while running his fingers through his hair.
"Says her," I scoffed then stated. "My whole life has been a lie."
"Now you're being overly dramatic," he stated.
"Well it has been a lie. Here i am, thinking your an estranged human dad and i find out your not. " I mumbled.
"That's why you shouldn't assume anything about anyone." He took a bit of his sausage.
"Well I don't want to assume anymore. Tell me everything." I begged.
"No." He shook his head.Damn he was stubborn. I guess that's where i get it from.
"Why?" I demanded.
"If you want to know more, you have to call your mom." Were his last words before he returned to his newspaper and breakfast.
So I would have to wait until my mom called, since she wasn't answering at the moment. Which wasn't strange of her because she was on vacation and having the time of her life. I couldn't fault her for that. Even moms where allowed to enjoy themselves every now and then.
Shaking the thoughts of my mom out of my head, I focused on my food. I peered over to see my dad eating what was left of his pancakes. He wasn't going to say anything further. With nothing more left to say, I decided to eat my breakfast in silence---gathering my thoughts before I began my day.
