Riley stayed at her parent's house for the night. She was far too tired to bother going home and talking to farkle and she was DEFINITELY not staying at Maya and Josh's while she watched them be perfect parents with their perfect daughter in their perfect house with their perfect jobs and perfect lives. The thought of talking about Maya so harshly made her sick but it felt right. Why did everything always turn out so well for Maya? Except maybe her dad. And her mom. And Alison. Actually, she didn't have the best life. Her life was very hard. So was Riley's though. It's a lot of pressure to always be perfect and happy and the greatest friend in the world. Especially when you don't feel like that on the inside. Especially when you are so insecure you bottle up your feelings and push them away so you can fix and deal with everyone else's lives because you don't dare to fix your own problems because that's scary and Riley doesn't deal with scary things too well. Scary things where bad news. Perhaps though, she would have to deal with her issues instead of hiding behind the happy facade. It was time to open up the Pandora's box of Riley's feelings. What would happen? No-one knew.
Except the universe.
The universe knew.Maya had decided to begin an intervention of some sort. Not the traditional kind of intervention, when everyone sits in a room and in a circle with really pitying faces. Riley wouldn't like that. Riley needed to talk to someone who could understand her and as much as Maya hated to admit it, the people that could do that were her parents. Cory and Topanga knew their daughter very well. So in a terrible case like this, the best people were the people that knew her from the moment she was born. That was the person remained calm and silently overjoyed and the person who was screaming and crying and fanning the tears from their face. The birth was an emotional time for Cory. He was a potato.
Maya called Riley's parents when she was sure Riley was at work. They agreed and where on their way to Riley and Farkle's apartment with Riley's bag. Meanwhile, Autumn was spending some time with Shawn and Josh. Maya was getting ready for the small intervention. A larger one would have included all of the family but in specific cases, a smaller intervention seems more fitting. Farkle and Maya and The Matthews would be the only ones talking to her. They just hoped she would listen. After waiting around for Riley to return home, she eventually did. She wasn't shocked or surprised or angry. Her face was blank and emotionless and that was worse. She simply sat in front of them and sighed and looked away. Probably because river was sat on Topangas knee right in front of her.
"Riley..." Cory started,
"Stop. Please. Stop whatever this is right now." She almost spat out the words as though they left bitter taste in her mouth, Maya saw and stiffened a little and held river close to Riley.
"I won't stop until you look after your baby, Riley. Look at him. Hold him."
"No, stop it."
"Not until you hold him."
"This is not the time to be so stubborn peach....'"
Riley didn't get the word out as Maya interrupted,
"YOU CAN NOT CALL ME THAT RIGHT NOW."
"Why?" Riley's voice began to break and she moved her head slightly in Maya's direction.
Topanga intervened,
"Riley, baby. Please tell me what is wrong with you. You are my daughter and there is something wrong."
"There is nothing wrong mom."
"Look at river then."
"No."
"Why? Are you so deep into rileytown that you can't see what's normal anymore?" Cory had taken the words out of everyone's mouth. He stared at her intently but got no reply. He would break her, she was his daughter and she could crack.
After sitting quietly throughout the theatrics of the intervention, farkle decided to speak. His voice was sharp and his eyes stern and Riley could see in the corner of her eye that he was not joking. He was not being the loving farkle right now. He loved Riley but she had to snap out of it. What ever it was.
"Riley, can you see how serious I am? That's how serious you need to be. Because if you can't look after your baby. If you can't go back to being the Riley that you where. The lovely light of my life. Then we are over. Because I am not raising a child when his own mother won't look at him. Prove me wrong. look at him."
Tears trickled down Riley's cheeks as she sobbed her reply,
"I......I can't I, sorry. I'm so sorry." Riley's brown eyes matched Farkle's for a second and then shifted back to her dress. It was clear she was in so much pain.
"WHY? WHATS WRONG? TELL ME!" Maya demanded with angry tears prickling in the corner of her eyes. Cory gestured for her to leave the room and Maya obliged, slamming the door behind her. Farkle looked at Riley again. Took a deep breath and said, " that's your answer. So be it." He stood and brushed a hand through his hair and walked out of the room, to the sound of Riley's sobs loudening.
"Riley baby. Look at him." Cory said. He placed a finger under her chin and lifted her face up to match his eyes. He then gently and delicately moved her eyes to match Rivers'.
"Oh my god." Riley finally looked at her beautiful baby boy and her arms yearned for his touch. " he looks just like farkle except his eyes." She said wiping her tears away to look at the baby properly.
"He has your eyes." Farkle said from the other side of the room. He walked over to his family and joined them. He looked up then and saw something.
A glimmer.
A twinkle.
A spark in Maya's eyes.
Her plan had worked. She had planned every detail of it. She knew what Riley would say and do and how they where to respond. How Topanga would hold river for the longest because it was a mirror image of Riley holding him. How Cory would lift Riley's head because they have similar eyes and that would see how her eyes could be clear and not full of worry. How farkle had to walk away so Riley could see how serious this was and how Maya would shout and scream at her and sometimes have to leave the room, but she would stay at the door and watch and protect.
It worked.
Of course it worked.
She was a very, very, very mischievous person.
