I woke to Danny tossing and turning on the other side of the bed. Reaching for my phone, I clicked it on and saw it was three am.

"I can't." Danny repeated in his sleep. "No. Don't make me do it."

"Danny, baby, wake up." I said and shook him.

"No. He's just a kid." He panted, eyes still glued shut.

"Danny!"

He grabbed my arm and rolled on top of me, his hands grasping my throat to choke me and his grip getting tighter by the second. Finally, his eyes opened just as I felt myself losing consciousness.

"Max!" He let go of me, allowing me to breathe.

"What... the fuck were you doing?" I gasped for air.

"I thought I was... and you were..." He tried to say as tears rolled down his cheeks.

"Shh, it's okay, baby." I kissed his lips and wiped his tears away. "It's not your fault."

"I was... back in Afghanistan." He pulled me into a tight hug and nuzzled his face into my shoulder.

"Have you been having these nightmares a lot lately?"

He nodded.

"Maybe we should take you to a therapist. And you could always apply for disability with the VA if they diagnose you with PTSD."

"Help me, Max." Was all he said.

"I will, baby, I'm here for you." I kissed his temple lightly.

But in reality, I was just as scared as he was.

.     .      .

"Morning." Danny yawned as he walked over to the coffee pot.

"Morning." I replied as I flipped the pancakes.

"How'd you sleep?"

"Fine." I lied.

"I slept like a rock." I could tell that was a lie too.

I nodded and went back to the breakfast I was cooking. "What are you doing today?"

"Not much. I'll probably go food shopping and wait for you to get home."

I sighed and took the last pancake off of the skillet. "Danny, we need to talk."

"About what?"

"About you." I sighed. "I don't want to sound like a complete dick, but it's been six months since you've come home. You can't just sit around waiting for me all day."

"Okay, what do you want me to do then?"

"Get a job. With your military experience, you could probably be a police officer or state trooper."

"Maxy, I don't think having a gun on me at all times is going to help with the nightmares."

"Then go down to the VA and talk to some people who are dealing with the same thing as you."

"Just take me to the god damn therapist, I'll talk about my feelings, and I'll be cured." He said with a sarcastic smile. "That way you and everyone else will be happy because I won't be crazy."

"I never said you were crazy, Danny."

"You think I am though."

"Danny, I just want to help you, I'm your boyfriend."

"I don't need your fucking help, okay. I still have all of my limbs and I'm not wounded so I'm fucking fine."

"I'm sorry, I-"

"Don't. No matter what I say or do, you're still going to try to get me help." He shook his head and glanced down at the floor. "Maybe you should have stayed with Levi. At least you didn't think he was crazy."

"Danny." I called out.

He slipped on his jacket and threw his shoes on, then opening the door.

"Danny!" I screamed.

He slammed the door shut but I quickly chased after him, rushing out into the hallway.

"DANNY, YOU ASSHOLE, GET YOUR ASS BACK OVER HERE YOU FUCKER!!!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.

But he still kept walking. Then he disappeared down the hallway.

I sank to my knees as I felt the tears coming on. The love of my life had just walked out the door and I didn't know whether he was coming back.
