*7 months later*
I stood on the balcony and looked out at the city gleaming brightly in the night. With tears roiling down my cheeks, I held the letter in my hand. It read:
Dear Maxy,
I'm okay. I'm still alive and have all my limbs so there's no need to worry. Though you're probably still going to keep worrying about me, I just thought I'd let you know.
Things have been the same out here. Afghanistan is Afghanistan. Mostly we just do target practice and patrol around but the bond that the guys and I have out here is great. I've been good though, I swear.
I'm sorry that I've been talking about absolutely nothing but I guess I'll get to the point. It's been almost two years, Max. I miss you and I know that you sure as hell must miss me. You don't know what's going on here other than what I tell you and vice versa. Hell, you might have already hooked up with a guy for all I know. But, I don't want you to feel lonely. I want you to be in love and have someone there for you who can hold you and kiss you. I can't do that while I'm all the way out here. Forget about me. Go out and find a man to love and marry. I'll come home eventually and we can still be friends. But I don't want you to be waiting for me forever.
I love you, Max, I'll see you soon.
Love,
Danny
"Fuck." I whispered and wiped my tears away.
"Max, are you okay?" A voice asked.
I look over to see Levi on his balcony looking at me as if he wanted to help me. The glint in his eyes was sincere and loving. He was concerned about me.
"I'm fine." I said and wiped my tears away.
"I'll be at your door in two seconds."
I sighed when I saw him rush out, seconds later I heard a knock on my door. Unlocking it, I let Levi in.
"What's going on?" He asked as I closed the door.
"It's nothing. I'm fine." I replied with a lie.
"Obviously you're not. You were crying."
I sighed and gestured for him to sit on the couch. We both did and Levi looked to me, waiting for me to say something.
"My boyfriend has been in Afghanistan for almost two years and he just broke up with me by letter."
"Ouch, that's like ten times worse than getting a break up text."
"Yeah, so that's why I was crying like a little bitch."
"I'm sorry that happened to you, Max. Maybe he just wasn't the right guy for you."
"I guess not."
"Hey, I have a bottle of wine back at my place. What do you say I go get it?"
"Sure, I'd love to wash my sorrows away with alcohol."
Levi smiled at me and got up. This would be interesting.
. . .
I picked up the bottle and tipped it for more wine but nothing came out. I pouted at that but it was probably a good thing since I was way too drunk already.
"I wanna tell you a secret." I said to Levi who was also pretty drunk.
"What?" He giggled.
"I think I'm a little drunk."
"I know."
I chuckled and poked his cheek. "You're pretty cute."
"So are you." He smiled.
"Wouldn't it be funny if we, like, made out or something?"
"Yeah, I guess it would."
I nearly jumped on him to press my lips against his. It was a sloppy kiss but that didn't seem to matter at the time. His hands pulled my shirt off and I slipped off his. Quickly, I started undoing his belt, not thinking at all.
The drunk me was making a huge mistake for the sober me.
