"We will be starting Hamlet tomorrow. Please refrain from losing these." I said to the class as I handed out the play to them.
The bell rang and students piled out of my classroom. All but one blond boy who didn't move from his desk.
"Xavier, you can't just hang out in my classroom all day." I told him.
"Can I ask you something?" The kid questioned.
"Of course."
"Do you think my dad or Danny would flip out if I told them?"
"Told them what?" I asked, sitting on the desk next to his.
"That I like boys instead of girls."
"Xavier, your father and brother love you. They're your family and they would never be mad at you for who you fall in love with. And if they ever kicked you out, which I know they would never do, you could always come stay with me."
"Thanks, Max." He smiled shyly.
"So, do I sense that you have a little crush on someone?" I smiled and nudged him.
At that moment, his cheeks turned bright red.
"You totally do!" I smirked.
"Shut up!"
"What's his name?"
He sighed. "You have to promise that you won't tell Danny. He'll make fun of me."
"Trust me, I wouldn't tell your brother even if I wanted to. He's still pissed at me anyway."
"His name is Connor and he's really cute but he's, like, wicked smart and I can barely have a conversation with him without sounding like an idiot."
"Aww, that's cute."
"God, I'd give anything just to tap that ass." He nearly groaned.
"Xavier!"
"At least I'm honest. But his eyes though... they make my heart melt."
"Yup, you're in love." I sighed. "I remember seeing Danny in the hallway and feeling that way. Well, now it's been eight years and the butterflies have died but who cares because you're young and still have a chance."
"How do I ask him out?"
"Just ask him to hang out. Invite him to one of your lame teen parties. Then, make him a bit jealous that way you can tell if he likes you back."
"You should teach a class on this."
"Men 101, I'm no expert but I sure as hell know a lot." I smiled. "Now go to class and fantasize about your high school sweetheart."
"Thanks for everything." He smiled and walked to class.
I smiled as he left and went to prepare for my next class.
. . .
I let out a heavy sigh and knocked on the door. I knew that I had been acting like a complete dick toward Danny lately and I needed to apologize to him. It wasn't his fault he was having nightmares and seeing things. Hopefully the make up sex would solve things.
Danny answered the door and his bright expression disappeared. "What the hell are you doing here?"
"I thought we could talk." I said.
"Max, it's over. We're better off just staying apart."
"Can't we just work it out like the Beatles song says? We've had plenty of stupid fights before, why can't we just talk like we usually do?"
"WHAT THE FUCK, DAD!?" I heard Xavier scream from inside.
"Shit." Danny muttered to himself.
We both rushed inside. Derek and Xavier stood in the kitchen, the sixteen year old with a red mark on his cheek.
"Don't you dare disrespect your own father like that again, boy!" Derek shouted.
"MY MOTHER BECAME A DRUGGIE BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T KEEP YOUR FUCKING DICK IN YOUR PANTS!!" Xavier retorted.
"YOUR MOTHER WAS ON DRUGS BEFORE I CHEATED ON HER!"
"CAUSE SHE FOUND OUT YOU WERE FUCKING GAY!"
Derek looked like he was about to beat the living shit about of his son. Before he could do anything, Danny stepped in front of him. I pulled Xavier who was in tears away.
"Come on, I'll take you over to my apartment and let you calm down." I said, leading the kid out of the house.
So Xavier had finally found out why his parents got divorced. Hopefully this would blow over. Hopefully.
