Chapter 5- The demon! *edited*

I carefully continued to carve the ancient drawings on Vanelope's walls and door careful not to break the protective seal of the salt at my feet before her door. I made all the symbols exactly identical. A protective eye encased in three ovals each one of them standing for the arms of the father, the son and the holy spirit.

Once done I wiped my hands on my jean clad thighs and stepped carefully over the salt perimeter encasing Vanelope's room all over except the window I saw in my vision.

Vanelope was ready for bed, her already pale skin tone, ashen in worry as Esteban tried to sooth her fears.

I smiled shyly at the frightened younger teen before taking a seat besides her. "Hi Vanelope." I said slowly.

She turned her head my way and tried to give me a reassuring smile.

"I'm going to rub salt over your body just to make sure the Shadow cannot hurt you. Is that okay?" I asked covering all my bases.

Vanelope nodded.

"Please tell Ms. Ortiz to join us Esteban." I commanded.

Within a second Ms. Ortiz and Esteban were besides me watching as I snapped on protective see through latex gloves. I dipped my hands into the large salt bowl I brought into the room with me and started to run my hands lightly over Vanelope's body to leave salt drops over her skin. Once I made sure her arms, legs, torso, neck and head had enough salt to protect her and turned to Ms. Ortiz and Esteban.

"I need you guys to make sure everyone that's in the house besides me and Eric have salt on their body in the next five minutes. Including pets if you have any." I ordered as Eric joined me in Vanelope's room.

"Did you lay salt around the house?" I asked. Eric nodded in his usual 'I don't agree with your ways but I'm going to let you crash and burn on your own' way.

"Come on" I urged rolling my eyes and leading him out the room and into the vacant kitchen.

"Amelia are you sure we can trust him?" Eric asked his deep brown eyes staring at me almost scared.

The corner of my mouth quirked up into a small smile."I feel it in my gut Eric. It's like the time I chose you as partner. It just feels right." I smiled shyly.

Eric's warm calculation eyes swept over me before he nodded, letting the tension leave his tense shoulders.

Suddenly everything around us turned sickly cold and quiet.

"Do you hear that?" Esteban suddenly asked in Vanelope's room

Eric and I slowly made our way to Vanelope's room. The minute I crossed the salt barrier the pure white uncut diamond around my neck began to heat up and emanate a grey-ish red light through my shirt. I held my breath as I allowed my other senses to fan out and reach as far as possible. Mr. and Ms. Ortiz held their breaths outside the bedroom and Esteban drew Vanelope into the protective circle of his arms. I turned my gaze away from them not allowing myself to feel the lonely ache inside my soul.

Then I heard it. The swooshing sound as if someone was dragging a heavy blanket across rocks.

'Shh shh shh.'

The sound drew closer and I instinctively turned my body towards the window. The little hairs on my arms stood on end as my heart began to pound. Suddenly the neighing of a frightened horse sounded close by before something pounded into the side of the house. A loud shriek was heard before the window slammed opened a force powerful enough to cause the window to slam against the ceiling and glass to fly everywhere. "He's here!" Eric whispered while Vanelope screamed into Esteban's chest.

The greatest fear any man or woman can have is loneliness in a cold white room.
