"Kira, will you please tell me what we're doing?" You whined to your girlfriend from where you were sprawled on her bed.
The kitsune turned from where she stood at her closet, a knowing smile on her face. "Nope! I told you, it's a surprise!"
You groaned in annoyance, sitting upright. "But I hate surprises."
She only shook her head, her dark hair brushing against her shoulders. "I promise, you'll love this one."
"Maybe I will, but you won't give me any hints! You've been planning this date for like three weeks and haven't told me a single thing about it! I'm dying to know what you've planned."
She pulled a casual red dress out of her closet, inspecting it before placing it on the bed. "You'll find out soon enough. And trust me, you'll love it. Now c'mon, we need to get ready."
You huffed, scrambling to climb off of the bed. "Well, if I don't know where we're going, how am I supposed to know what to wear?"
Kira rolled her eyes, grabbing your hand and pulling you to the closet. "Anything you want! It doesn't matter, really, unless you decided to wear pajamas. You can't wear those on this date."
You laughed at her comment. "Fine, I won't wear pajamas," you teased. You busied yourself with riffling through her closet, stopping when you found a simple black skirt. You pulled it out of the closet, turning towards Kira.
"What about this?"
"Perfect," she replied with a nod.
The two of you spent nearly an hour getting ready. You braided her hair, and you let her do your makeup. Despite the fact that you really didn't enjoy surprises, you felt excitement fluttering within you. You had a feeling that what Kira had planned was going to be amazing.
The date was taking place in honor of your one year anniversary. You couldn't believe you'd been dating for a whole year already, but you were happy as could be. It had been one of the best years of your life.
"Okay," Kira spoke as you both stood in front of the full length mirror that hung on her bedroom door. "My parents are out for the evening, so we're going to have our date here, I hope you don't mind. But I promise, it's going to be really romantic."
You grinned at her, bouncing on your heels. "I don't mind at all. I'm just excited to see what you have planned."
She moved her hands to smooth down her simple dress, then she pulled open the door. "Um...can you wait up here for a little while? There are still some things I have to do downstairs."
You simply nodded, turning to walk back over to her bed. "I'll wait. But hurry up, or I'm leaving," you teased, and her eyes went wide.
"No, I'll hurry so you won't leave," she rushed, running a nervous hand through her hair.
You laughed out loud, realizing that she hadn't understood your teasing. "Hey, relax, I'm only kidding. I'm not that much of a bitch."
Kira sighed in relief, a sheepish look crossing over her face. "Sorry, I should've realized you were teasing. Anyway, I'll be right back."
Then she was gone, her shoes tapping against the floor as she scurried down the hallway. You sighed contentedly, stretching a body before you rose from your seat, deciding to occupy yourself by looking around your girlfriend's room.
You'd been in here many times, probably more times than you'd been in your own bedroom. But you'd never really stopped to take in the details of the little place that Kira loved to hang out in. There were pretty decals carefully placed on the walls, and there were a couple fun picture frames, too, holding pictures of her family.
You ran your fingers against the wall as you strode over to her dresser, your face lighting up as you realized that there were several pictures of the both of you, and even some pictures of just you. Kira had even taken time to draw little hearts on some of the pictures, which made your grin widen even more.
One photograph stood out to you above all the others, though. It was a picture that had been taken at a school lacrosse game. Kira had her arms wrapped around your shoulders, and the both of you were laughing. It was from the night you'd first asked her to go out with you, and she'd accepted. You looked back on that night with fondness, thinking about how lucky you were to have met her.
"Hey," Kira's urgent voice came from the doorway. You set the picture down and turned towards her, almost laughing when you saw that she had flour all over her dress. "Um, can you give me a hand? I'm sort of screwing up everything in the kitchen." She blew a strand of hair away from her face.
"Yeah, sure," you obliged, hurrying to follow her as she headed down the hall and to the stairs. The distinct scent of burning food filled your nose as you walked into the kitchen, and as if on cue, the smoke alarm began going off.
"Oh no!" Kira exclaimed, rushing forward to turn off the stove. You watched in amusement as she bustled about the room, carrying her pan of burned food and pouring it into the sink. Some of its hot contents splashed out and onto her forearm, and she instantly dropped the pan into the sink, grasping onto her arm.
"I'm ruining the whole night!" She said in despair, leaning against the counter.
"Hey, it's alright," you assured her, striding over to her.
"No, it's not. I was trying to make dinner for us, it was going to be so great, but now it's all ruined," she moaned.
"Don't worry about it, I'm not upset."
"But I've been planning this for weeks! And I'm never this bad in the kitchen, I don't know what happened."
"Kira, it's okay. We can just order some pizza or something."
The kitsune sighed, glancing at you. "I know, but I worked so hard and it's all ruined. I'm sorry, I really wanted this to be special for you, for us."
"We can still make it special. C'mon, let's clean all this up and then we can order pizza and change into more comfortable clothes."
Kira sighed, wiping her hands on her already stained dress. "Fine," she agreed.
You straightened up the kitchen together, and then you grasped your girlfriend's hand, leading her out of the kitchen and back up the stairs. While Kira changed into clean clothes, you used your phone to call in and order pizza.
By the time you were done, Kira had managed to change into a tank top and a pair of sweatpants, her sleek hair pulled into a loose bun. "Even though I ruined dinner," she began, "that doesn't mean our date has to be completely ruined. The real surprise wasn't just me making us dinner, I set up a whole thing in the backyard. We can eat our pizza out there."
"Sounds perfect," you responded, taking her hands in your own, "thanks for all the hard work you put into this."
"Hopefully the hard work pays off," she grumbled.
You shook your head at her. "You complain too much. Relax, Kira. I'm gonna change, I'm sure the pizza will be here by the time I finish."
She nodded silently. "Yeah, I'll go downstairs and wait for it to arrive. Plus I have a surprise for you, one that won't get ruined like dinner."
Then she was gone again, and you let out a sigh before changing back into the clothes you'd been wearing earlier. After running a brush through your hair, you clambered down the stairs, just as the doorbell rang, indicating that the pizza had arrived.
Kira was already answering the door when you walked into the living room, and she turned away from the door with a thin box of pizza. She smiled warmly, bowing a little as she displayed the box to you.
"Okay," she began, "wait here. I have a surprise for you in the backyard and I just need to make sure everything is set up properly."
"Alright. Hurry though, I'm starving."
She scurried off to the back door and you made your way to the kitchen, busying yourself with gathering some plates and napkins. You stacked everything neatly atop the pizza box, just as Kira stepped in through the sliding doors, a smile on her face.
"C'mon!" she excitedly coaxed, waving you over.
You gathered everything, and quickly followed your girlfriend out to the backyard, a gasp leaving your parted lips as you took in the sight before you. "O-oh my...Kira, you did all this?"
You motioned to your surroundings, and the kitsune vigorously nodded, strands of hair falling from her bun. You looked around in wonder at everything she'd set up. There were soft fairy lights carefully hung around the deck, and there were sweet smelling candles placed everywhere, along with quiet music playing in the background.
"Do you like it?" Kira inquired, taking the pizza from you and placing it onto the glass tabletop.
"Oh yes, I love it. I can't believe you did all this for me," you admitted.
Kira slipped an arm around you, holding you close. "Well, believe it. You totally deserve a romantic date. You're the best girlfriend ever. C'mon, let's eat."
She entwined her fingers with yours, pulling you to sit next to her at the table. You ate until you couldn't eat anymore, ending up having the time of your life just sitting there with each other, talking and laughing until your sides hurt.
"I love you so much, Kir," you murmured once you'd finally settled into a comfortable silence.
She turned to you, a soft smile gracing her features. "I love you more."
"No," you continued, "you don't understand. You've done all this for me, you planned this whole date for me, for us. And I didn't even get you anything in return."
She only shook her head, reaching out to brush her fingers over your cheek. "I don't expect anything in return. The look on your face when I surprised you was all I could ever ask for."
You smiled at her sappiness and leaned into her touch. "Thank you for everything. I'm so glad we're together, you're really special to me. This year has been one of the best years of my life because of you."
Kira brought her other hand to your face, cupping your cheeks. "You're welcome, I'm glad we're together too."
She pulled your face closer, closing the gap between you and bringing her lips to yours. You stayed like that for a long while, kissing deeply, feeling the electricity that ran through the both of you, sifting through your veins. Kira was the only person that could make you feel this way, alive and whole. She was the only one who could fill you with so much love you felt you would burst. She was the girl of your dreams.
Finally, the both of you pulled away, gasping for much needed air. "Wow," Kira breathed, "why don't we make out more often?"
"Hey, I'm available for making out anytime," you replied with a good natured grin.
"Good. Hang on a second, I have one last surprise for you." She pulled away, her warmth leaving you.
"Seriously, another surprise? You've outdone yourself."
She bounded off the deck, ducking down beside it for a moment. You heard her shuffling around, until finally, a mechanical noise began emitting from where she was tinkering. In a flash of light, you turned to see she'd activated a movie projector.
Its picture reflected off the side of her garage, which stood several feet from the deck. A smile erupted on your face when you realized your favorite movie was being played.
"Oh my god, how did you manage this?" You asked as Kira hurried back onto the deck.
She shrugged, gracefully sitting next to you. "Well, I borrowed the projector from school. I thought you'd like to watch your favorite movie outside since it's a really nice night."
Instantly, you threw your arms around her, pressing a kiss to her cheek. "You are the best girlfriend ever!"
"I know," she simply replied, laughter in her voice.
"Seriously, I can't believe you did all this for me. I love you so much."
She looked at you intently. "I did all this for you because, like I said, you're special to me, and you deserve to be pampered."
Thank you, thank you, thank you."
"Don't thank me, babe. It's no trouble at all. I love you."
"I love you too."
You settled against each other, her arms around your waist and your head perched on her shoulder. Right in that moment, you were in your element. You knew that there was nowhere else you needed to be than right there, wrapped in your girlfriend's embrace.
The relationship you shared was as pure as a white lily. It felt good and it felt right. You were meant to be with each other, there was no doubt about that in your mind. What you had together was just...natural.
Just like it was meant to be.
