AGE 4
You bit your lip, focusing on the scribbled drawing in front of you, a purple crayon clutched tightly in your tiny grasp as you coloured in the flower. Suddenly the crayon was yanked from your grasp and you looked up, a tiny scowl adorning your face. "Theo!" you cried, seeing the young boy running away from you, your crayon grasped in his hands. You took chase, your sun dress flapping as you sprinted after the boy, pigtails bouncing as you followed the boy. You could hear him laughing and you did as well, your high giggle filling the playroom as you chased after your best friend. "Give it back Theo!" You called, slowing down as he got further away.
"Give it back!"
13 YEARS LATER
You gathered your books from your locker, sighing as you looked at the door of your locker. You had stuck a photo to the metal, a photo that was 13 years old but still in almost perfect condition, after you had taken such good care of it after all those years. The picture was you, your head tilted and a large smile on your face. You were wearing your favourite dress at the time, a white one that went well with your skin tone and hair colour. You could remember being called an angel that day by your parents. Your hands were held behind your back, completing your angelic look. The boy next to you was Theo, an arm chucked around your shoulder with a satisfied grin on his face. He was wearing a polo shirt in the picture and jean shorts. 3 days after the photo was taken Theo and his family moved states, he returned for a short amount of time and the both of you rekindled your friendship. He didn't stay long. His sister was murdered, her body found in the creek. You could remember her funeral, you stood beside Theo and held his hand. You cried. Theo didn't. His family moved again once the case closed, leaving you to make new friends once again.
You look at the picture for a few more seconds before you closed the locker, the lock had only just clicked shut when 2 hands were pressed over your eyes, ridding you of your vision. "Guess who!" A familiar voice said, but you couldn't pin the voice to anyone you knew, not being this friendly with any boys. "I don't know" You say, shrugging and trying to turn around to face whoever had decided to cover your eyes. The hands moved and you instantly leaped into the boy's waiting arms. "Theo!" you cried, wrapping your arms around his neck. He lifted you up, burying his head in between your shoulder and neck, brushing against your neck. You laughed as he put you down, keeping his hands on your waist. "When did you get back?" You ask, having to look up to meet his eyes. Theo smiled at you before he spoke. "Just this weekend, I wasn't going to come to school but I knew you would be here." He said, squeezing your waist lightly. You hug him again, remaining on the ground this time. "I got you something." Theo said as you move back, and he removes his hands from you waist, reaching into the back pocket of his jeans. He produced a tiny wrapped packed, complete with a small ribbon wrapped around it. You laugh lightly as you carefully untie the string, always being precise when you opened gifts. You slid your finger under the tape on the back, freeing the paper so the gift slid out neatly into the palm of your hand.
You covered your mouth with your spare hand, dropping the paper in the process. Sitting in the palm of your hand was a same 4 pack of purple crayons you insisted of bringing to preschool in the front pocket of your backpack everyday, the same packet you were using when Theo snatched the lightest purple from your grasp. "Theo!" You exclaimed, looking up to see his joyed expression. "This is the exact pack I had when we were younger! How did you remember?" You ask as Theo scratches the back of his neck. "I would never forget anything about my favourite girl." Theo said, a light blush on his cheek. "Thank you." You say, standing on your tippy toes and pressing a soft kiss on his cheek, your lips brushing dangerously close to his mouth. "We should catch up one night, see a movie or stay in." You say when you noticed Theo's blush spreading. "I would like that a lot." He said, a smile gracing his face to expose his perfectly white teeth. You take Theo's hand, leading him to your first shared class, smiles on both of your faces.
