SORRY ABOUT THE LATE UPDATE I'VE BEEN BUSY W SCHOOL

"Just go grab it, I said. It'll be fine, I said. Yeah, well a lot of damn good that did me!" I grumbled to myself, walking down the street quickly. My arms were hugging my body tightly and my leggings were not doing much to keep my lower half warm. I could see my breath materializing in front of me with every exhale, just pissing me off even more.
I wanted a nice warm dinner and I didn't really feel like cooking, so I had talked myself into braving the freezing temperatures to head to the store and get one of those delicious rotisserie chickens they had. Little did I know, my piece of shit car was destined to break down on me halfway back to my apartment. So, now I had to walk the rest of the way home, with a rapidly cooling chicken, in the 23 degree winter weather. Awesome.
I was walking as fast as my frozen legs would take me. The wind was picking up and I let a string of curses fly from my lips. I started to pass a few small houses and apartments that I knew were somewhat close to my place. A loud rolling noise broke me from my angry thoughts, and I looked up to see someone rolling their trash to the curb.
"Y/N? Is that you?" the familiar voice asked. I squinted my eyes, looking closer and realizing it was Brett. I knew him from the old lacrosse team rivalry between our schools, but we had never really talked until after graduating. We had ended up working together, and I found out that he was really nice. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't find him insanely attractive, too.
"Oh, hey," I said, walking up to him. "I didn't know you lived over here."
"Yeah, just moved in a few months ago. What are you doing out so late?" he asked. I shrugged my shoulders, holding up my chicken that was no longer warm.
"Well, I had went to grab dinner. But then my car broke down so I had to walk back. I believe my chicken has gone cold. Can I?" I explained, gesturing to his trash can. He nodded and opened the lid. I threw the bag in there with a sigh. "I guess I'll just have to cook something."
"I actually have pizza on the way if you wanna join me," Brett said, offering a smile.
"Oh, I couldn't ask that of you, really," I told him, shaking my head. An especially strong wind came through, making me gasp and curse quietly.
"You're freezing, get in here!" he insisted. I let a smile cross my lips and I gave in, following him inside. Brett took my coat for me, hanging it up and inviting me in.
"I like your place," I told him, looking around a bit.
"Thanks. It was a steal." We walked into the living room and my eyes landed on the little fireplace.
"Are you kidding? You have a fireplace? That's amazing," I gasped. Brett chuckled and agreed. "Would it be weird if I asked you to...maybe...light it up?" I bit my lip nervously, feeling embarrassed for asking.
"I would love to," Brett said, wiping away my worry. I gave him a genuine and excited smile as he stood up, grabbing some logs and throwing them on. Before long, there was a soft glow filling the room, warmth radiating from the fireplace. The pizza was delivered and we ate together, talking and laughing and enjoying ourselves.
"God, it's been forever since I've laughed this much," I admitted.
"Really? You have a beautiful laugh, Y/N." I felt a blush cover my cheeks as I averted my eyes to the floor, grinning just a tad. "I'd love to hear it more."
"You're smooth, you know that?" I asked playfully, glancing at him sideways. Brett chuckled and nodded.
"So I've been told." We got lost in conversation, witty banter flying back and forth between us. Before I knew it, my eyes were falling closed, Brett's voice becoming gravelly with sleep. I laid my head on his shoulder, one of his arms resting around me gently. The fire was still going, lulling me into a peaceful sleep.
"Well, good morning." I sat up slowly, my eyes cracking open.
"Oh my god," I groaned, wiping the sleep from my eyes. "I fell asleep on you. In your house. I am so sorry!"
"Y/N, it's fine. Really," Brett assured. "Here." He handed me a hot mug of coffee. I took it gratefully, not knowing what to say as I awkwardly sat there. Brett plopped next to me with a content sigh, taking a sip of his drink. "You know, I really had a great time last night."
"I did, too." I smiled at him sweetly, feeling a slight blush rise on my cheeks yet again.
"We should do it again sometime," he said, smirking at me. My smile widened at his words. "Maybe we can end up in the bed, though. The couch really cramps my neck." I laughed loudly, nodding my head.
"Smooth, Talbot. Smooth."
